Natural Boundary Condition[edit]

Hi, I was reading Lemon's Perfect Form and it talked about "natural boundary conditions". But I don't understand exactly how one determines them. It seems to me that one imposes some random condition then deduce stuff from it...?!

I understand from the book that a "natural boundary condition" is one which is "not imposed in the prob's initial description, [but] follows naturally from its variational nature". But it seems like one has to first artificially impose the condition on the system...
