Wikipedia:Requests for feedback/2010 November 4

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hello. I am a newbie and I would appreciate some feedback on this article.

  • This article has received feedback on its talk page and has been moved into the mainspace.

I added a new article for a screenwriter (John Bishop) that was not in Wikipedia although he successfully wrote two Broadway screenplays (directing one) and one Hollyood screenplay (a movie starring Gene Hackman and Tommy Lee Jones). I believe he is more notable than the average screenwriter since he has Broadway and Hollywood success and because he wrote an "A-list" film (albeit one that didn't earn a lot of money). I am not in any way affiliated to Mr. Bishop or his family and am not trying to promote him in any way. I'm just trying to fill in what I see as a gap.

If you like this article, please just add it. I've been editing for a while. Otherwise, comments appreciated.

Try to establish notability. Generally speaking a creative professional is deemed notable and thus worthy of inclusion if:

1.The person is regarded as an important figure or is widely cited by peers or successors.
2.The person is known for originating a significant new concept, theory or technique.
3.The person has created, or played a major role in co-creating, a significant or well-known work, or collective body of work, that has been the subject of an independent book or feature-length film, or of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews.
4.The person's work either (a) has become a significant monument, (b) has been a substantial part of a significant exhibition, (c) has won significant critical attention, or (d) is represented within the permanent collections of several notable galleries or museums.

However this is more of a guideline than a policy so check out WP:Notability (people).

You also need to use inline references so that every quote, every statistic, every extraordinary claim and every paragraph has a reference pertaining to it. See WP:Inline references and Wikipedia:Citing sources.--Ykraps (talk) 23:03, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Overlaying paths on maps

I've used the template:location map+ to place markers on a map Ibn_Battuta#Places_visited_by_Ibn_Battuta

The next step is to place a path or route on a map. I've worked up a nice and simple solution to this problem of routes or path using a transparent overlay. I've sandboxed it and I'm very happy with a first cut testing. I'll move on to cross-browser testing tomorrow. Can somebody with a LOT more experience with templates than me, give me some guidance on the following questions:

  • Should I cut a new template for my changes or roll them into Location map+ (I really don't want to fork unnecessarily, but I don't want to mess up anybody elses use of that template...)
  • Is there any sort of process for "approving" / testing this template for use, or do I just throw it up and start dropping it on pages??

I have an example here if anybody wants to take a look: User:Sladew/Ibn

My suggestion is to check out the Map workshop. The link is to a page to request a map be created, which isn't exactly what you are asking, but you can either post a request for feedback in the request section, or you can look at the editors who hang out there, and post a question to their talk page. Another place to check out is WikiProject Maps (oops, looks like you found that place). Finally, the talkpage at Wikipedia talk:Template messages isn't exactly on topic, but those people are familiar with templates, and might be able to help.--SPhilbrickT 14:55, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Article. Could someone kindly vet it? The article is about a book publisher in Singapore that is slowly gaining a lot of attention in the media and the arts scene here. They have published some well known titles about Singapore and Southeast Asia.

This entry has been or is about to be deleted. Why is this? How do I link references to this person. claims of his international work and top selling book children's book titles exist all through google but we are not allowed to link google. we are also not allowed to link names of notable people he has strong connections too beyond frienship. The subject in question has worked for decades internationally and still does however would it be prudent to supply websites to all these magazines (the ones still in publication?) Perhaps I've built this entry badly however I did follow other pages from individuals of his personal knowing. His works in the Royal Archives, his internationally published illustrations, articles on celebs, TV and broadcasting and works in the fashion industry etc., all listed but how does one supply "references" especially in the case of the deceased Royal Photographer to Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Norman Parkinson who collected the artist's wortks famously in the 70's? I'm at sea with the complications of this site. Eggs Aldo (talk) 12:39, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have moved this article to User:EggsAldo/Peter Jarrette as it clearly wasn't ready for the mainspace yet and would have been speedily deleted if left there. When creating new articles it is best to use the article wizard as this will create the proposed article in your own user space. Articles in user spaces won't be deleted so you can work on them at your leisure, moving them into the mainspace only when ready. The article currently has a number of issues and firstly you need to establish notability in other words are they worthy of inclusion in an encyclopaedia. Next you need to find reliable 3rd party sources. Doing this will also help establish notability. I will try to come back to this later but in the meantime the article should be safe from deletion.--Ykraps (talk) 16:35, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the feedback Ykraps. These issues will be dealt with accordingly.

Ykraps, I've been looking at other more complete pages that can be linked to mine on Peter Jarrette. One on Joel Resnicoff who worked alongside with my subject in the NYC art world too and like that artist, Peter Jarrette has a wealth of internationally published art and images I would like to add but alas I'm afraid the whole process and coding etc for links, images, references and notability is foxing me beyond my capabilities and more is the shame. Obviously you need to be a computer programmer to be a worthwhile, confident and capable user here. I would hate to misrepresent my subject purely because I don't have the hours I need to read the reams of, to me, baffling information in the help section. Can somebody give me some direct, easy to follow help with this? I would very much like to have this page contained and readied to publish in top class form.

Looking for feedback and to have the new article tag removed. Thanks in Advance

Tone is too promotional; reads like a press release rather than an encyclopedia article. Examples of peacock phrases: "a leading Evangelical minister"; "has created numerous organizations still serving those in need"; "Major media outlets and policy makers seek his opinions"; "grabbed national and worldwide attention"; "high profile leadership"; "a highly sought after speaker"; "helped avert a possible international crisis". Hello,

Please review the Fair Mortgage page. I am trying to get it moved to a public page.

I think I followed all the advice of Chevymontecarlo. I made sections, added names to articles and external links.

Please let me know what else I can do to make this live.

Thank you! Jackie

JackieVendetti (talk) 15:34, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nice job! I'm glad you've made some changes following my first review. You can use the 'Move' function to move your article into the main space and make it 'live' like you say. Please contact me on my talk page if you need any help with that. Thanks! Chevymontecarlo 07:00, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Abcov (talk) 16:37, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You need to place a link to the article you want reviewing in the section title. Chevymontecarlo 06:58, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Editor is blocked, and I see no record of starting any article, so this one is closed.--SPhilbrickT 21:12, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently I just need this reviewed because it is a new submission.

Alanbro44 (talk) 21:40, 4 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I think your article is a good start although it could do with a few more references, if possible. Also, you might want to maybe add an infobox if can, as well. Hope this is useful. Chevymontecarlo 06:54, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've created a new page for an up and coming musician Laila Biali.

Brian.auty (talk) 00:23, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've made various corrections which I hope are okay. I think overall the references are very good, and the overall formatting is excellent. I can't see any immediate problems. Well done! Chevymontecarlo 06:52, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
