- 1346 - King David II of Scotland led an invasion of England during the Hundred Years' War, but was captured in the Battle of Neville's Cross.
- 1604 - Kepler's Star: German astronomer Johannes Kepler observed an exceptionally bright star which had suddenly appeared in the constellation Ophiuchus.
- 1806 - Emperor Jacques I of Haiti (pictured) was assassinated near Port-au-Prince.
- 1989 - The Loma Prieta earthquake, the largest earthquake on the San Andreas Fault in California since 1906, struck the San Francisco Bay Area.
- 2003 - The pinnacle was fitted on the roof of the 106-floor skyscraper Taipei 101 in Taipei, allowing it to surpass the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and become the world's tallest building.
