Template:Barryhr (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

I'm tempt to speedy this as recreated content, but it's used in several pages. I don't see the point of having an template of all the home runs Barry Bonds hit, there is an bot User:StatsBot which updates players stats so it's rather unnessarry. • Delete with extreme prejudice. Clutter, fancruft, you name it. — Dale Arnett 07:35, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment the reason I created this template is becuase the number of home runs he hits is shown in sevaral different article including 5 times at Barry Bonds, 5 in 300-300 club and once in top 500 home runs. So whenever he hit a HR your can just edit 1 article instead of 11 differnt mentionings in several other articles. But I guess its is sort-of unnessarry, and he going to retire soon, which will make the template useless Coasttocoast 00:53, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Template:R from abbreviation (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

This template adds redirect pages to Category:Redirects from abbreviation. Before a MediaWiki upgrade, it also showed a text explaining the redirect, but hasn't for over a year, now. This template and its category (which is on its way to be deleted) are thus stripped of its last bit of usefulness and should, therefore, be deleted. Swift 01:01, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have to question the accuracy of your statements. What I see is that BetacommandBot (talk · contribs) apparently subst'ed all instances of this template and a number of others (which others regarded as an over-hasty action; see User talk:BetacommandBot#Substituting redirect categories.) Once the templates were subst'ed, then the text in there was truncated by the well-known effects of redirect processing. However, if you replace the subst'ed text with {{R from abbreviation}} again, it shows the text explaining the redirect. I don't think the MediaWiki upgrade had anything to do with it and I don't know where you got your figure that "for over a year, now" it hasn't shown a text when all it has to do to show a text is not be tampered with by bots. -- Antaeus Feldspar 16:40, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep for now BetacommandBot seems to be substing these and preventing the explanation text being shown. I don't think the redirect-type templates are altogether useless. I'd prefer consensus somewhere other than a deletion debate (TfD or CfD) on what to do with these templates and whether to subst them. --ais523 16:51, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
A-levels, Uk and Mergers all transclude the template and still suffer this problem. I have no primary sources for my statements, though. --Swift 16:53, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • The category link is still there, and the information is behind it. This is, however, probably not clear enough for new users. --ais523 17:10, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
As noted in the deletion proposal, the category is up for deletion. Both category and template are useless. Novice users won't see it, admins are supposed to know better. These would be speedy kept at RfD. --Swift 19:03, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • Hmmmm, now it's getting really weird. If you edit one of those templates (or at least "A-levels"; I didn't want to tamper with all three) and preview it with the exact same text it has now, it shows the explanation text appearing after the redirect, as it should. However, if you save it and then look at the page -- the explanation text has disappeared. I don't know what's going on but I don't think showing a preview that isn't what you actually get when you save is planned behavior for the software. -- Antaeus Feldspar 19:09, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing weird about this. When you preview, you don't see the redirect rendered, but as normal MediaWiki markup (which is why the "#" becomes "1." and "REDIRECT" is shown). When you view the actual page , the page is rendered with the redirect link as expected. You can search bugzilla for this issue, but this is how the software has behaved for quite a while now. --Swift 19:33, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, even if BetacommandBot messed things up. -- User:Docu
  • Keep per Antaeus Feldspar. I think it would be better to have a consensus about the redirect templates as a group. Wmahan. 07:21, 24 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
