Wikipedia:Tools/Browser tools/Opera/URL shortcuts

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Allows the user to go to a Wikipedia article from the Opera address bar by typing "wp Article_Name".

Opera 9

[edit]

In Version 9 "Create search..." from the context menu of a search form allows adding a URL shortcut more conveniently.

In other words, right-click on a search box, click "Create search" and follow the instructions. Choose an easy to remember keyword for the Wikipedia search, such as wp. The process should now be complete.

Usage

[edit]

Simply type "wp Article_name" into the address bar without quotes, where Article_name is the name of the article you wish to navigate to.

Alternative instructions

[edit]

The following instructions may be necessary if you are using an older version of Opera.

Opsed Opera Search.ini Editor

[edit]

The program Opsed Opera Search.ini Editor automates the process listed below for manually adding a search entry, and is compatible with the latest versions. It is suggested to change the File version in search.ini manually to the current Opera version used before running this program.

Instructions

[edit]
  1. Find for search.ini in your Opera or profile directory.
    • Note: Try searching "search.ini" in Windows' Search or Macintosh's Spotlight.
  2. To define the English wikipedia as a search engine, add the code to the search.ini file:
  3. Note: the number section title ([Search Engine 43]) must be unique, and the numbers should be continuous. That is, use the next free number there, not necessarily 43. You can delete any preceding search engines in search.ini that you do not want.
  4. Note: Also beware of key conflicts -- if you assign the same key to two search engines, only the first one will work.
  5. Note: this file may be overwritten by a default search file if you upgrade to later versions of the browser, so make sure to back it up if you don't want to add these lines to search.ini again.
  6. Note: The file version under the heading [Version] should have the number of the current version used; for example if using Opera 9.0, the command should be File version=9 (8 for any version of Opera 8.0, etc.). If this isn't done, the search.ini may revert to the Opera defaults.
