[edit]

What unique record does Les Leeds hold in VFL/AFL history? --Roisterer (talk) 03:56, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find him on a list of players. Was he an umpire? If so, was he a grand final field, goal and boundary umpire (presumably different years)? --TheGrantley (talk) 00:57, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The only player who actually plaed a game not to appear on official AFL player records? Jonesy (talk) 01:59, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, my source listed him as "Les Leeds" but we have him listed as "Billy Leeds". Anyway, while he was indeed a VFL player, the Grantley is actually closeish. --Roisterer (talk) 02:15, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
First player to both play in a grand final and subsequently umpire one? πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 02:22, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
getting even closer. --Roisterer (talk) 02:37, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
First (and only) player to play in a grand final and goal umpire one. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 05:32, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That is very close. He was a field umpire and there may be other people who played in a grand final and umpired a VFL match, what happened in 1904 which makes Leeds unique? --Roisterer (talk) 09:00, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Did he umpire and play in the same game sonehow? Maybe an umpire got injured and he got the call up? Jonesy (talk) 09:03, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No. Can I say that he initially retired from playing at the end of 1903 but made a comeback? --Roisterer (talk) 09:34, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
the only player to have retired as a player, umpired, and then returned to play. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 09:42, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll pay that. Leeds retired at the end of 1903, took up umpiring in the VFL before Carlton lured him back where he played in the 1904 Grand Final, making him the only person to have umpired a VFL game and played in a VFL Grand Final in the same year. --Roisterer (talk) 10:55, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's very generous of you! I guess "the same year" was the critical part of the answer - but I imagine you weren't prepared to sit through dozens of variants of the answer before someone stumbled across the right one by some fluke! πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 11:16, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q202

[edit]

This is a Who am I type of question. I start with a relatively obscure bit of info, and add to it each day till you get the answer (although I concede that it's not entirely out of the question that a smarty pants might get it first time).

Who am I? I was recruited by Melbourne in the early 70s for a reasonable amount of coin. I became one of the first in a long line of expensive flops that Melbourne was to recruit in the ensuing decade which would include Carl Ditterich and Kelvin Templeton. --πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 11:29, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If I get this right, you may need to start more obscure, like his mmother's maiden name or something. Of course, if I get it wrong, please ignore. Diamond Jim Tilbrook. --Roisterer (talk) 11:51, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bloody hell!! Smart arse!! (take that as a postive) πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 12:40, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q203

[edit]

The father of which current AFL footballer is a former Mr South Australia bodybuilder? --Roisterer (talk) 07:14, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First wild guess, probably of many: Matthew Pavlich? --TheGrantley (talk) 04:08, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think Pavlich's father played football as well but he wasn't a bodybuilder. The player in question plays for a South Australian based team. --Roisterer (talk) 01:03, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Travis Boak? --TheGrantley (talk) 10:21, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No. The player in question played for a non-South Australian side before returning to SA. --Roisterer (talk) 00:15, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I imagine Hugh Minson's ol' man might be a pretty big bloke. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 00:36, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I try not to imagine Hugh Minson's old man. Also, it's not him. --Roisterer (talk) 01:18, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For a further clue, the player in question played for the SA team that had a win this weekend, not the only the somehow construed to lose. --Roisterer (talk) 02:35, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Scott Thompson? Jonesy (talk) 03:25, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aye, that's him. Scott's father Wayne (IIRC) was a Mr South Australia during the 70s. --Roisterer (talk) 04:00, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q204

[edit]

Buddy Franklin kicked 11 benhinds in a game last year against the Western Bulldogs. Who is the only other player in the last 20 years to kick ten or more behinds in a single game? Jonesy (talk) 07:04, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take a stab at Matty Richardson. Pippu d'Angelo (talk) 08:36, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Peter Sumich was also good for the odd point per game Gnangarra 08:43, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, neither of those two. Jonesy (talk) 09:00, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Jako of the Allan variety?The-Pope (talk) 10:00, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's the correct Jakovich. Not afraid of showing a bit of brotherly love on the field either. Over to you Pontiff. Jonesy (talk) 10:08, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q205

[edit]

A few weeks ago, Chocco said that Port was the best 0-4 team ever. Freo currently has 1 win, 11 losses with a % of just under 85%. This is an AFL record. Which club and year is the next highest % with a 1-10 start to the year? Hey, if we have to be bad, we might as well be the best bad team of all time. (And Choco was wrong, statistically, anyway - 20 teams have started the season 0-4 with a better % than Port's 77.6%, most recently Richmond last year). The-Pope (talk) 12:51, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Carlton 2002, Gnangarra 13:08, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, a bit higher than the 73% the blooze had in 2002. The-Pope (talk) 15:16, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Port in 2000? --TheGrantley (talk) 02:01, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bullies in 2003. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 13:24, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope those two clubs were 1-1-9 after Rd 11, not 1-10. Coincidently, the correct team won their second game for the season in Rd 12 by beating NM... who Freo play tomorrow. The bad news, and litle hint is that they only won 1 more game for the year... and he big hint is that they didn't win a game at all for the next few seasons!The-Pope (talk) 00:19, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fitzroy in 61? --Roisterer (talk) 01:41, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In 1941 Geelong had a 1 and 10 record after round 11 with a percentage of 83.9%. They beat North in round 12 and ended up ahead of St Kilda and Hawthorn on percentage at the end of the year. Jonesy (talk) 03:11, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, the 41 Cats are the next best... and they then missed the 42-44 seasons due to the fuel rationing in the war. And for the record, Freo is currently has the best ever % for a team 2-10 with 89.7%... next best being Melb in 77 and Hawthorn in 98 with 86%. The-Pope (talk) 14:50, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q206

[edit]

Who am I? - I made my debut in 1970 against North Melbourne and played over 200 games for my club. I played in two premiership teams seven years apart, won two club Best and Fairests (1976 and 1978) and was a representative for my state in these two years. In my last year I won the Reserves B&F for my club. Jonesy (talk) 08:58, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Trevor Keogh? --Roisterer (talk) 12:06, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well done Roisterer. I wasn't sure how many Blues fans there were out there and with Keogh being my favourite player when I was a young Blue I was keen to get him into a question. Over to you for the next Q Roisterer.

Q207

[edit]

The new bloke at my work just mentioned in passing that his great uncle was a former VFL player, who played over 100 games, played in a premiership, represented the Big V and even headed his team's goalkicking on more than one occasion. Whose great nephew am I now sitting near? --Roisterer (talk) 00:01, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Michael Roach? πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 03:36, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A bit before Disco's time (but right club). --Roisterer (talk) 03:59, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wouldn't be Ray Poulter would it? Three times leading goalkicker for the Tiges in 1949, 1950 and 1955 and represented the Big V on 3 occasions also. Jonesy (talk) 06:35, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A bit after Poulter, so we are zeroing in here. --Roisterer (talk) 06:49, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bruce Monteath πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 08:14, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Who knew there were so many Richmond players who fit the bill. Not Monteath either. The player in question sounds like he could have been part of the Irish experiment. --Roisterer (talk) 12:24, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Paddy Guinane?Jonesy (talk) 12:33, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes indeed, Paddy's great nephew has joined my work. He told me Paddy worked as a lecturer at Swinburne until he retired but I don't think I can add that to the article as it probably counts as Original Research. --Roisterer (talk) 12:56, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q208

[edit]

Robert Harvey joined a pretty elite club this week. Why?Jonesy (talk) 10:10, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Exactly 20 years since he debuted. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 12:59, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not what I was thinking of. Jonesy (talk) 13:08, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Played with someone who wasn't born when he made his debut. Either that or he helped Ross Lyon build an ark for the biggest flood since Noah. (And Freo's still too stupid to know how to beat a flood)The-Pope (talk) 16:02, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correct (at least the first part of your answer is). I read somewhere that Harvey became the ninth VFL/AFL player to play either against or with a player who wasn't born when he began playing. I must admit last night's game was not that inspiring either. Over to the Pope. Jonesy (talk) 23:55, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q209

[edit]

Who am I? A former WAFL player, my three kids now make the news more than me. One is representing Australia, another WA and the third plays in a national league... but they are in three different sports.The-Pope (talk) 14:13, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So, to clarify, none of the kids play in the AFL? --Roisterer (talk) 11:12, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not yet...The-Pope (talk) 14:28, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I fear we are going to need a clue. --Roisterer (talk) 08:39, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. --TheGrantley (talk) 00:47, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm guessing the three kids are in: the Olympic Hockey team, the WA cricket team and the WA netball team in that new comp. Please feel free to correct any or all of these! πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 07:16, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Forgot all about this... Pippu has the daughter right, but no hockey. The youngest hasn't made up his mind yet whether to stick with the sport he's currently (ie right now this & last month) representing WA at or switch to the sport at which big bro & Dad made/are making their reputation.The-Pope (talk) 08:50, 2 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lance "Buddy" Franklin Snr!! πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 10:32, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a little bro Buddy coming through the ranks? Not the one I'm after. Little Bro is playing for WA at the National U18 Champs.The-Pope (talk) 13:17, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Simon Outhwaite. Just read about him on the front page of The Age! --πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 23:12, 3 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, not Mr Outhwaite, who I happen to see quite often at Freo games at Subi. To recap: Dad's WAFL career was not notable, but he went on to represent Aust in another sport for many a year. Oldest son has just emulated him by making the Aust team, in the same position, but with a very different style. Daughter is in the national Basketball league, not the netball (sorry for that - I got mixed up). Little bro is currently playing for WA in the U18 champs, but may end up choosing to play the same sport as older bro and Dad instead as he is talented at both sports. The-Pope (talk) 14:54, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Geoff Marsh??Jonesy (talk) 00:22, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Finally!!! Swampy played a few games for South Freo in the late 70s before switching full time to wielding the willow. Shaun has obviously done well recently and Mitch is playing in the U18 Champs, but also has just received a rookie contract from the WACA.The-Pope (talk) 13:18, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q210

[edit]

What happened in the recently completed round 14 that has never occurred before?Jonesy (talk) 05:47, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

All the non-Victorian teams lost? --Roisterer (talk) 07:16, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's it. Round 14 2008 was the first time all non-Victorian teams in the AFL had lost since Port joined the comp in 1997. Over to Roisterer. Jonesy (talk) 07:31, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q211

[edit]

I don't know how much media this has received and therefore whether it's an easy question. Which former AFL star is playing in the Ceduna league this year? --Roisterer (talk) 01:17, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Byron Pickett. Moondyne 01:25, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Too easy. As our article states, Pickett initially signed with Port Magpies this year amid great fanfare, but disappeared without playing a game, only to pop up in Ceduna. He's still only 30 so a bi loss to the Magpies. --Roisterer (talk) 03:06, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q212

[edit]

Another easy one probably. What do Sam Kekovich and Jim Stynes have in common? Moondyne 03:26, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok a clue: It is more to do with their personal lives, but does also touch on footy, and the answer is in a Wikipedia article. Moondyne 00:52, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They both have a brother called "Brian" who also played footy. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 05:14, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. Moondyne 06:11, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's always such a shock for me to get an answer right. The last time I did a "who am I" Roisterer got far too quickly. I'm gonna pull a special one out of our bible when I get home tonight - till then! πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 07:20, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q213

[edit]

Who am I? I was the younger brother of an established Footscray player when I was signed by the Bulldogs in the first half of the 1970s. I played one game for them. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 13:47, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Daryl Collins? --Roisterer (talk) 00:11, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, heh - Roisterer - what can I say - you are too good! πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 13:40, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q214

[edit]

Now, my brother used to teach English in Japan where he worked with a former VFL/AFL player. The player in question only played a handful games but had an elder brother who played over VFL/AFL 50 games. Any guesses? --Roisterer (talk) 05:06, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was tempted to go Andrew Jarman - until I realised that he played a fair few games. I knew my own club could throw up a few possibilites. I was toying with Rod Macpherson, but he too played a few games too many - so I'll put my money on Jamie Grant. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 11:20, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not Jamie. Not even the Bulldogs. --Roisterer (talk) 12:53, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think you have told me this story so I won't give my answer yet, although in what may be a first, I might give a clue (presuming Roisterer's brother didn't work with two people who match this criteria). There's a South Adelaide link to the players. --TheGrantley (talk) 08:49, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Scott Bassett. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 11:06, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not Scott Bassett either. Yes, I do know TheGrantley; odd little man but relatively harmless. The player in question (and his brother) both played for South Adelaide and went to a Melbourne based team. --Roisterer (talk) 23:01, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Can I put people out of their collective misery and say Brenton Harris, Darren Harris's brother? --TheGrantley (talk) 02:31, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, yes, that's right. Darren Harris is mostly remembered for being the bloke Dermott Brereton blames for his hip injury. --Roisterer (talk) 14:02, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q215

[edit]

I'll go with something easy. Which former VFL champion was severely injured while fighting a bush fire in country Victoria? --TheGrantley (talk) 06:41, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I believe that would be Gary Dempsey Jonesy (talk) 08:17, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. If I had the time, resources and wasn't so lazy, Dempsey would be the sort of article I would build up to GA level. --TheGrantley (talk) 02:03, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q216

[edit]

Simon Wiggins plays his 100th game for the Blues this weekend. He will be the third Carlton player hailing from Glenorchy to achieve this milestone. Name the other two. Jonesy (talk) 22:26, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

John Chick (footballer) was the one I know of. That'll be a start for someone else to finish off the question. Moondyne 01:07, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
On the right path Moondyne. John Chick (footballer) is indeed half the answer I'm looking for. Jonesy (talk) 02:10, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Rodney Eade came from Gelnorchy. I know he didn't play for Carlton but I thought I would show off my knowledge. --Roisterer (talk) 04:35, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, not Rocket. It appears the player I am thinking of does not have a wikipedia page. He played 135 games for the Blues before moving to South Melbourne for the last two years of his career. Jonesy (talk) 09:09, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bill Cosby's's uncle, Eric Huxtable, seems to fit. The-Pope (talk) 10:17, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Huxtable's the man. There was an article in The Age on either Wednesday or Thursday this week about Chief Wiggins and they mentioned he was the third player from Glenorchy after Huxtable and Chick to top the ton for the Blues. Over to the Pope. Jonesy (talk) 22:23, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting that the Glenorchy football club website I looked at didn't even mention Huxtable in its list of players who made it big in the VFL:/AFL. --Roisterer (talk) 23:57, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In that case I hope the information I based my question on was correct. I know I shouldn't believe everything I read in the papers so I apologise if I was misstaken. Jonesy (talk) 04:05, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Huxtable's profile at blueseum.org states that he played for New Town. It's not clear whether he lived at Glenorhcy though. My apologies - I should have checked first. Jonesy (talk) 09:48, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q217

[edit]

What happened on the weekend, that last happened in April 2000. The-Pope (talk) 02:31, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

freo won at AAMI Gnangarra 03:09, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have been stuck in a pine plantation Gnangarra for the past few years? Freo is 5w/5l at AAMI since 2004. Probably one of the better records in the league. But yes, surprise surprise, it is Freo related!The-Pope (talk) 06:05, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Freo didnt score behind in the last quarter Gnangarra 06:29, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Was it the first time Fre defeated a grand finallist from the previous year? --Roisterer (talk) 01:35, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Won without Pavlich in the team? Jonesy (talk) 08:33, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Freo score 20 goals or more in a game Gnangarra 09:55, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Heavy Metal Rocker has it. April 2000, Rd 4, the week prior to Pav's debut, Freo beat Richmond by a point at the Dome with Modra kicking 7.7. Since then Pav's only missed 1 game in 2001 (which Freo lost) until Sunday. The-Pope (talk) 11:16, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, what a fluke. I just happened to be watching On the Couch and they mentioned Pavlich didn't play (didn't get to see much of the Port v Freo game as my missus made me take her out to lunch). Will try and get a question up today. Jonesy (talk) 22:47, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q218

[edit]

What is the significance of this list? Michael Tuck, Jim Flynn, Charlie Hardy, Jim Flynn, Michael Tuck. The names listed twice are supposed to be there twice. Jonesy (talk) 11:10, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm guessing it's got something to do with the ages of when they were part of grand final winning teams. So Tuck is the oldest to win a premiership, Flynn 2nd oldest, Hardy 3rd oldest, and then both Flynn and Tuck make further appearances in 4th and 5th places. --πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 11:38, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, will have to put on my thinking cap to come up with more difficult questions in the future. Flynn is in the top ten three times and besides Tuck, the other player with multiple entries in the top 20 is Alastair Lynch. Over to you Pippu d'Angelo. Jonesy (talk) 23:05, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It might look like I got it quickly, but I had to research and think hard about it for a solid 15 minutes! πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 04:28, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q219

[edit]

Every time I try a vague who am I, Roisterer gets it first time. So I need to try something different. Ok - got it (thinking as I type)...in 1982, Simon Beasley joined Footscray from Western Australia and went on to have a decent career. The following year, he was joined by three compatriots, and while all three didn't necessarily carve out long VFL careers, it represented a bit of a rebirth for Footscray, culminating in a finals appearance in 1985 (under Mick Malthouse). Who were those three West Australians? πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 04:32, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Barney,, Budgie & Shorty? The-Pope (talk) 07:25, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, misread the Q. Those three debutted in 85. 83 had the much less imaginatively named Andrew Purser, Jim Sewell & Bruce Duperouzel The-Pope (talk) 07:31, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Pope - you're close - Super didn't come across directly from WA, but via the Saints - the 3rd one came from across the Nullabor at the same time as the other two to produce the perfect triumvirate. This one is lesser known than the other two, but did manage a fair few games in 83. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 13:11, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, this question has just reminded me of a magic moment from my past. About 15 years ago I was doing some trianing in Perth, and this woman in the crowd finds out that I'm a Footscray supporter and she says that she knows some blokes who once played for Footscray, but she thought I wouldn't know them. I said try me. So she rattles off Andrew Purser, Jimmy Sewell and this 3rd bloke. Of course I know them! But she really did know them (not necessarily in the biblical sense). So she rings up Purser, he invites us over, and we had an absolutely great night talking footy till the wee hours. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 13:17, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Never heard of him, but the 1983 WAFL Football Register mentions an Ian Williams (I'm guessing not the math rock(???) guitarist!) leaving the Swans to try his luck over East, and one shows up on the Scraggers alltime playing list. The-Pope (talk) 02:03, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well done Pope - he's your man. He was a wiry, mean looking mother who played mostly as a flanker at either end (a bit reminiscent of "Bones" McGhie, who was a subject of this very quiz in its earliest days, might've been my first ever question). Played most of the games in 1983, doing his bit to lift the dogs off the bottom, but it was a bit downhill from there. He barely played in our finals year of 1985 (if at all), and he finished up at the end of the 1986 season. πιππίνυ δ - (dica) 03:31, 4 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q220

[edit]

Apologies in advance to The-Pope for stealing his glory but I thought I would take advantage of Rule #3 and ask the following question: Former South Melbourne player Ted Whitfield had a routine he used to follow on the morning of each match, which involved ingesting a quantity of a particular substance. What was it? --TheGrantley (talk) 03:44, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beer ! Moondyne 04:20, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes! Six beers to be precise. He even followed this routine on the morning of the 1945 VFL Grand Final. --TheGrantley (talk) 00:28, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A good guess. The Bloodbath. Whitfield copped a 21 match suspension. Crikey! Moondyne 01:09, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a list anywhere of long VFL/AFL suspensions? Moondyne 01:11, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had a quick look but couldn't find any (although my searching skills are awful). Such a list would be quite useful. Would John Bourke's 10 year suspension top it? --TheGrantley (talk) 02:10, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A year or so ago the AFL had a stats section on their website that basically covered everything from who played/kicked goals in each round for each team for each year, but also had a full tribunal list. I think its still online, just not updated or linked to from their current menu system. Luckily I ran a few web queries at the time and managed to download all of the tribunal stuff. Updating the AFL Tribunal article with some more long or notable suspensions is on my unwritten todo list.The-Pope (talk) 02:24, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
