Location categories[edit]

categories for categorize arts' forms/objects/genres?

People categories[edit]

I'm thinking we need something similar to Category:Humanities occupations, like Category:Arts occupations. Note that an occupation doesn't necessary mean a job title. Here is what currently exists:

These 2 are part of the little used (?) and oddly constructed Category:Arts, design, entertainment, sports, and media occupations . If we get an Arts occupations category, this should probably be deleted.

  • Category:Artists - but note Category:Artists by medium has several non-visual artist categories. Because of this, I think it might be difficult to have a category of people in the visual arts and a category of people in the arts.

People by location[edit]

Perhaps some of the problematic Category:Arts genres by country or nationality could be taken care of with a category like Category:Arts occupations by nationality. Where 'nationality' is used since this is about people, not objects (and then 'by country') would be used. --Clubmarx 03:39, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arts occupations by nationality sounds a bit of a mouthful to me. How about Artists by nationality or is there some other problem? - Kleinzach 10:24, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If Artists by nationality referred to all arts occupations, then Artists would need to be a top-level Arts category, but that is incorrect since Artists is part of Visual arts. Not all people in the arts can be categorized as artists: curators, historians, etc. So there needs to be something more inclusive that Artists. I don't think Arts occupations by nationality is that wordy. There is a Category:Artists_by_nationality already, btw. Clubmarx 19:11, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Right. I take your point. - Kleinzach 20:04, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Suggestion by Ham

How about simply Arts people, with Arts people by nationality as a subcat? That's not a mouthful. HAM 19:50, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arts people could work although I have a slight reservation. 'Occupation' focuses on the activity that is related to arts, do they draw, act, etc. Arts people may have the tendency to get subcats that may not really do with the arts; there may be categorizable aspects of people in the arts that are not relevant. I'll use a silly example, Bad drivers. There are arts people that are bad drivers, so should Bad drivers be a subcat? Versus, bad driving is not an arts occupation. --Clubmarx 16:44, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A fair enough reservation, although I find it hard to imagine a situation like the one you've described above actually happening. I would have preferred Arts people over Arts occupations for reasons of brevity but will readily accept the latter as a compromise. What does everyone else think, though? HAM 18:13, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Second thoughts: After browsing through Category:People and Category:Occupations, it seems there are no precedents for my suggestion – no Category:Science people, Category:Humanities people or Category:Sports people, only Category:Science occupations etc. I'm with Clubmarx on this now. HAM 18:29, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My understanding of the word nationality is that it applies to people not things, however in the category (above) there are lots of things. In the case of opera we have Category:Opera by nationality although it could equally be Category:Opera by country. Should we change all of these? Kleinzach 10:14, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are right, nationality is not for objects. Category:Art by nationality should be renamed IMO. I came across an arts-related discussion about when this may not be true. Films(?) where an object is an expression of an identity or culture of a country, so nationality makes more sense. But I don't feel that it's a strong enough argument. --Clubmarx 06:27, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. We don't say "What nationality is that painting?", "What nationality is that song?" etc. If I want to change the category 'Opera by nationality' to 'Opera by country' - which I don't think anyone will oppose - what is the easiest way of doing it? - Kleinzach 10:41, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Shoot - I was looking up what page to link to, and I see that art is listed as an example of the proper use of by nationality. Opera is there too. I guess it doesn't need to be changed. ? --Clubmarx 22:51, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Obviously wiki-admins are not immune from bad English - on the other hand if it is a much wider problem, it's not something I want to dedicate hours of my time to. Maybe your feelings are similar? - Kleinzach 20:17, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did a little bit of searching but wasn't able to find any discussion about the arts cats listed. But, I agree, it seems to be a widespread phenomenon. Seeing 'art by nationality' makes me cringe but I'll leave it be. --Clubmarx 21:46, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Opera categories[edit]

For reference/comments, this is the schemat for opera. Obviously it reflects what there is at the moment, rather than any idealized conception. - Kleinzach 10:19, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
