1948 - Roy Acuff announced he was running for Governor of Tennessee. He would eventually lose to the Democratic candidate Gordon Browning. 1964 - Two policemen and 30 concertgoers were injured when a riot broke out at a Rolling Stones concert after Keith Richard kicked a person that was spitting at them. 1967 - The Beatles met the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. 1967 - Elvis Presley's film Double Trouble premiered. 1973 - Marty Robbins signed with MCA Records. 1978 - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band officially opened in theaters. 1980 - Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys announces he is running for mayor of San Francisco. 1984 - Aretha Franklin's father, the Reverend C.L. Franklin, passed away, five years after being shot in a burglary and entering a coma from which he never awoke. 1987 - La Bamba, starring Lou Diamond Phillips as Ritchie Valens, opens. 1990 - A wrongful death trial against Judas Priest opened in Reno, NV. The basis of the charge was that their album Stained Class had subliminal messages that caused two teens to commit suicide. 1995 - Public Enemy is forced to postpone their farewell concert when Flavor Flav gets in a scooter accident and breaks his arm. 1995 - A three-night celebration of Frank Sinatra's 80th birthday started at Carnegie Hall. 1997 - Liam Gallagher from Oasis was cautioned by London police after he reached out of his limousine window and grabbed a cyclist, breaking his glasses. 1998 - The Gift of the Nation concerts were being held in two cities in South Africa. Artists included Stevie Wonder, LL Cool J, Dru Hill, Chaka Khan, Kenny Lattimore and James Ingram. 1998 - Tanya Tucker sued Capitol Records for $300,000, saying that they were not promoting her releases or career. 2003 - The film Masked and Anonymous, starring Bob Dylan, opened. 2008 - 50 Cent sued Taco Bell over their using his name and image in an advertising campaign without his permission. 2009 - Blink-182's reunion tour kicked off. |
