Assessment

[edit]
Wikiproject Ships Article Ratings

Please check out Category:Unassessed Ships articles and assess articles according to our guidelines!

Article improvement

[edit]

Of course articles also need to be expanded and improved. Check out Category:Stub-Class Ships articles and Category:Start-Class Ships articles to find articles that really need work. Many Start-class articles look great, but they need to cite reliable sources before they can be considered B-class.

United States Navy ensigns

[edit]

The number of stars on the flag of the United States changed every time a new state was admitted. We have a template, {{USN flag}}, that we like to use in U.S. Navy infoboxes to ensure that the right flag is used and to give a consistent appearance. You can read about it at Template:USN flag, and start using it in articles.

You can also check out the article for Jack of the United States, which has a listing of all of the various jacks the navy has used, and use the "What links here" feature on each one of them to find articles where jacks need to be replaced.

In addition, you can also try to eliminate uses of Image:USN-Jack.png. It's a png, so it's obsolete, and it's often used incorrectly. Replace it with {{USN flag}}.

Infoboxes

[edit]

If you see a ship article that doesn't have an infobox, please add |needs-infobox=y to the {{WikiProject Ships}} banner on the talk page of the article. That way, people can use Category:Ship articles without infoboxes to find articles without infoboxes and add them.

You can also add an infobox yourself, or replace an obsolete, non-template infobox with the latest one. Please see the documentation for {{Infobox ship begin}} and its talk page for more information on how to use the latest infobox templates.

Add pictures

[edit]

If you go to Image:IIH.png or Image:No Photo Available.svg and scroll down, you can see articles which lack images. We'd really like to get images for ships wherever possible. A good source for public domain United States Navy images is the Naval Historical Center's web site: [1] If a ship article lacks an image, and a good image is available from the Naval Historical Center, upload the image to Wikimedia Commons and add it to the article.
