Location and General Description of Property

The railroad of Rio Grande, El Paso and Santa Fe Railroad Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located entirely within the State of Texas. The main line extends from Texas-New Mexico State line near La Tuna, Tex., to El Paso, a distance of 20.200 miles.

Introductory

The carrier is a corporation of the State of Texas, having its principal office at El Paso, Tex. While it was incorporated originally as the Rio Grande and El Paso Railroad Company, its name was later changed to the Rio Grande, El Paso and Santa Fe Railroad Company. The carrier is controlled by The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company through ownership of the entire outstanding capital stock. On the other hand, the records do not indicate that the carrier itself controls any other common-carrier corporations. Prior to July, 1889, separate accounting records for the carrier, with the exception of construction records, were not maintained. The results of the operation of its property during that period are included in the accounts of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Rail Road Company and are not separable. The property of the carrier has been operated from the date it was placed in operation to the date of valuation as follows:

Corporate History

The carrier was incorporated October 28, 1880, for a period of 50 years, under the general laws of the State of Texas, as the Rio Grande and El Paso Railroad Company, for the purpose of constructing and operating a railroad in the county of El Paso, Tex. On May 21, 1914, the name of the Rio Grande and El Paso Railroad Company was changed to the Rio Grande, El Paso and Santa Fe Railroad Company. The date of organization of the company was January 14, 1881.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

The owned mileage of the carrier, extending from a connection with the railroad of The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company at the New Mexico-Texas State line to El Paso, Tex., a distance of 20.200 miles, was constructed by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Rail Road Company for the carrier during the years 1880 and 1881.

Leased Railway Property

The carrier uses on date of valuation property owned by other companies and other companies use property owned by it to the extent indicated in the statement below. The description of the property, the period and terms of use, and the rentals accrued and charged or credited to income for the year ending on date of valuation are as follows:

The El Paso and Northeastern Railroad Company, The El Paso & Southeastern Railroad Company of Texas, The Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway Company, The Texas and Pacific Railway Company, and the National Railways of Mexico, bonded warehouse and tracks appurtenant thereto at El Paso, Tex.; for indefinite period from Aug. 1, 1907, subject to 60 days' notice; stipulated payments equal to one-fifth by The El Paso and Northeastern Railroad Company and The El Paso & Southeastern Railroad Company of Texas and one-fifth each by the other companies of 7 per cent on valuation of $33,978.22 plus 7 per cent on additions and betterments, plus the same proportions of taxes and insurance, plus a proportion, on a freight-tonnage basis, of maintenance and operation. $2,802.45
