The Smoky Mountain Railway Company, hereinafter called the carrier, is a single-track standard-gauge steam railroad, located in the southwestern part of North Carolina. The owned mileage extends in a general northerly direction from Ritter to Bone Valley, both in the State of North Carolina, a distance of 9.063 miles. The carrier also owns yard and side tracks totaling 1.162 miles. Its road thus embraces 10.216 miles of all tracks owned. In Appendix 1 will be found a general description of the property of the carrier.


Corporate history.—The carrier, whose principal office is located at Asheville, was incorporated August 1, 1905, for a period of 60 years, under the general laws of the State of North Carolina, for the purpose of constructing, maintaining, and operating a railroad for public use. Construction work was begun in September, 1909, by the carrier's own forces, and was completed July 1, 1911.
