This course examines the development of Korean material and visual culture from the end of the 19th century to the present. A broad range of visual art, including painting, sculpture, architecture, textiles, ceramics, photography, performance, and film produced in Korea and by the Korean diaspora will provide comparative perspectives on global modernism.

Students will be asked to choose an artist, an object or site, or a key institution such as a museum to write and/or edit its Wikipedia article. Because modern and contemporary Korean art and visual culture have only recently begun to attract scholarly interest in the US, Wikipedia entries have been limited. Students will draw from the most recent publications in English (at least three new books on this topic have been published in English the past couple of years) to write and edit their article.
