This course provides a survey of the history of race in the United States from the earliest colonial times to the present. In part, this class is designed to develop your appreciation for the interconnectivity of global cultures and the convergence and interaction of peoples from across the globe, as well as the country’s indigenous inhabitants, during this five hundred year period. Specifically, we will focus on the ethnic diversity of the country, including the ways in which race became inextricably intertwined with class, gender, religion, culture and regionalism.
We will use Wikipedia to write pages for racially diverse historical figures who are underrepresented in scholarship.
