The objective of this course is to take an existing game design and, in a team effort, produce a working demo of one or more typical levels, which can, in turn, be presented to a game studio or other investor for further development. As such, it focuses on core mechanics and gameplay. Except for special circumstances originating from the design, the user interface is handled by an appropriate game engine that the students have been exposed to in previous classes. To implement the design, the class will be divided into teams typically found in game studios, according to students’ wishes, backgrounds, and aptitudes. The overall software engineering process follows the Agile Paradigm.

In class - Introduction to the Wikipedia assignment

Welcome to your Wikipedia assignment's course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.

This term, your class is participating in a special initiative (funded by the Broadcom Foundation) to create new Wikipedia biographies of people in technological fields (broadly defined) from historically underrepresented communities. In particular, you will be tasked with choosing an individual who has made notable contributions to a technological field (current or past) in the United States who belongs to one of the following communities: African American, Hispanic/Latinx, or Native American.

Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page. Throughout this project, you will be able to submit different stages of your work to your Wikipedia Expert for review on the Dashboard.

You may choose a subject for the biography from the list provided or you may independently find an individual through your own research. Remember, you will be creating an entirely new entry on Wikipedia, so make sure the person you select does not already have an article.

Your work this term will serve as a critical step forward in making Wikipedia more representative and equitable!

Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Assignment - Wikipedia assignment blog

Begin a blog about your experiences. You can use discussion questions to frame your entries, or reflect on the research and writing process. Create at least one blog entry each week during the Wikipedia assignment.

Milestones

This week, everyone should have a Wikipedia account.

Assignment - Choose your article

You may choose an individual from the list provided or you may wish to identify someone not on the list. As you're considering who to work on, review the following:

  • Does the individual meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines? In order for an article to meet these guidelines, you must identify 3-5 reliable and verifiable sources of information about the subject. This may be your biggest hurdle as you select a figure for this project.
  • Do not rely on sources like blogs, company, or personal websites. You need to find sources that are independent of the person in question.
  • Make sure that the person has some connection to the United States. They need not be American citizens, but they should have studied or worked in the United States for a significant amount of time.
  • Think about the ways in which your person contributed to some type of technological field. You can choose an historical or current figure.
  • Ensure that the person you choose belongs to one of the communities mentioned above: African American, Hispanic/LatinX, or Native American.
  • Remember, you will be writing an entirely new entry. Do not choose someone who already has a page on Wikipedia. Be sure to check to ensure that the person you choose does not yet have a Wikipedia article.
  • Be sure to look at Wikipedia's policies around writing biographies of living people.
  • If you're writing about an academic figure, look at Wikipedia's notability guidelines for establishing the notability of people in academia.

It's time to start building out your bibliography for your Wikipedia assignment! You've likely already collected a few sources about your person, but now it's time to take a deeper dive. Consider the following as you're finding sources for this project:

  • Are the sources reliable? Do they come from publications that are independent of the person you're writing aboutk such as news articles or academic publications?
  • Sources not to use include: blogs, personal websites, and social media. These are not considered reliable.
  • Remember, you must identify at least 3-5 reliable sources in order to create your new biography.
  • When you're ready, submit your bibliography for review on the My Articles section on your home tab.
