How do Native American and Indigenous Pacific Islander women lead and participate in Indigenous political movements? How and why are Native women (and other Two-Spirit, queer, and trans people) targeted in specific ways by settler colonialism? Why are issues of gender and sexuality centrally important to Indigenous movements for decolonization?
The above questions are at the heart of this course. We will also consider the concerns and methodologies of Native feminisms—theories and actions that highlight how settler colonialism is a fundamentally gendered process. We will learn about the legal and social structures in the
U.S., Canada, and Pacific Islands that foster unchecked sexual violence against Native women, as well as the inspiring activism of Native women fighting to dismantle these structures.
