The goal of this seminar is to study, research, and make visible a cohort of African scientists who, in the 1980s and 1990s, were vital actors in the early history of HIV/AIDS. We are living in a moment in which understanding the history of infectious disease has become a pressing necessity. Recent scholarship about the history of HIV/AIDS in Africa has begun to define the field. One important gap in both the history of HIV/AIDS and the history of Africa is the acknowledgement of the critical role of African scientists in discovery, prevention, and treatment of HIV/AIDS.
