An introduction to the study of the interplay between language variation and society, encompassing both the use of language to mark socio-cultural identity and group membership, as well as the social and cultural factors that determine language variation, starting with geographical dialect and moving on through social class, age group, ethnicity, gender & sexuality; along the way touching on mechanisms of historical language change, identity performance & speech style, language & power, language contact phenomena and language policy. The Article Finder results for "Sociolinguistics" and for "American English dialects" suggests many possibilities for start-class articles and stubs to choose from for a "classic" semester-long assignment.
