This course offers a broad overview of the regional trajectory of politics in Africa. The purpose of this course is not to provide you with detailed accounts of particular countries in Africa, but rather to provide you with the tools and analytical frameworks to understand political trends on the continent. The course is divided into three parts. In the first part we will examine the role of pre-colonial and colonial legacies on shaping contemporary African politics and the particular kind of rule that we observe in the region. In the second part, we examine the challenges to democratization, including the persistence of authoritarian rule and the challenges of state building. The third section turns to examining contemporary challenges and opportunities of ‘development’ on the continent, with attention paid to particular country cases and issues.
