This course is an introduction to new scholarship on what is now referred to as the Howard School of International Affairs. Focusing on race and empire in international relations, this course reexamines the ideas of Howard University academics Alain Locke, Ralph Bunche, Rayford Logan, Merze Tate, E. Franklin Frazier, and Eric Williams. Between the 1930s and 1950s, these scholars represented an African American (and Afro-Caribbean) internationalist tradition, and the only sustained critique of the hierarchy of the international system and the buttressing role played by race.
The course has a small enrollment of four students. All four will work together to collaboratively author a new Wikipedia article for the Howard School of International Affairs (similar perhaps to the article for the Chicago School of literary criticism). Students will also close read and critique existing articles for schools of scholarly thought, add a few sentences to existing biographical articles, and link the newly authored Howard School article with related articles. They will also write an accompanying reflection paper on knowledge construction in Wikipedia, connecting with course themes and readings on how erasure takes place in scholarly communities.
