This assignment will constitute part of the grade for graduate students taking ETGR 5303 Ergonomics. Course is cross-listed as senior level courses, but additional work is required in order to receive graduate course credit. These graduate courses are part of our Master of Fire Protection and Safety Management Program.

The assignment has two options: Contributing content to an article or Translating an article. Creating a new article may also be possible, but modifying current articles is more manageable.

Roughly 20% of our students are from Saudi Arabia, and few health/safety articles have been translated to Arabic, which is why I am interested in having a translation option. Thais Morata has a colleague at NIOSH/CDC that knows Arabic and Mike Benjamin has a colleague from Iran who also knows Arabic so that Arabic translations can be checked. Two students in my Fall 2020 course translated articles to Arabic, which seemed successful.

Translate an article

If you have fluency in a second language, you may wish to translate a Wikipedia article either from the English Wikipedia to the Wikipedia of your second language or vice-versa.

When translating articles, keep the following in mind:

  • Be sure to check that the article you wish to translate does not already exist on the Wikipedia where you'll be doing the translating.
  • Be sure to evaluate the article you wish to translate - i.e. ensure that it's well-developed and well-sourced.
  • Keep in mind that each language Wikipedia has its own set of norms and policies and is administered by its own community.
  • Finally, remember that translation is not simply about words, but it's also an act of cultural understanding and exchange.
