My course is all about communication theories. We discuss the ethics of creating theories as well as how to evaluate and test them. We spend the rest of the semester overviewing a handful of theories from various communication fields. My class is somewhat different from a traditional communication theory class because my students are learning about critical, non-Western theories (those written by non-Western authors or those about non-Western populations). These theories are less known and less talked about, but I do not believe that is right which is why it's the emphasis of this class. Before the semester began, I already looked into whether Wikipedia had articles on some of these theories and found that, in most cases, there were not articles about them. That's why I want my students to participate in this program. I want them to contribute to people's knowledge about these theories by using the skills they learn in my class coupled with the skills they'll learn from the Wikipedia program. My plan is to have 8 small groups of students. Each group will choose one of the theories we've talked about in class and write an article based on that theory - providing its background, its tenets, its strengths and limitations, and how the theory is or can be applied to real-world scenarios.
