Assignment - Practicing the basics

Welcome to your Wikipedia project's course timeline. This page will guide you through the Wikipedia project for your course.

The course has also been assigned a Wikipedia Content Expert. Check your Talk page for notes from them. You can also reach them through the "Get Help" button on this page.

To get started, please review the following handouts:
Editing Wikipedia pages 1–5
Evaluating Wikipedia

For your assignment, please arrive in class on April 3 having completed the following tasks:

  • Create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you.
  •  It's time to dive into Wikipedia. Below, you'll find the first set of online trainings you'll need to take. New modules will appear on this timeline as you get to new milestones. Be sure to check back and complete them! Incomplete trainings will be reflected in your grade.
  •  When you finish the trainings, practice by introducing yourself to a classmate on that classmate’s Talk page.

Week 3

Course meetings
Monday, 10 April 2017
Assignment - Add to an article

Familiarize yourself with editing Wikipedia by adding material and citations to a Wikipedia article.

  • Select 1-2 readings from the course material on the syllabus, or from your past related courses and own reading. Be sure to clear any reading that is off the syllabus with your teaching assistant.
  • Select one Wikipedia article that is relevant to the course material. Confirm with your teaching assistant that this is a relevant article and not too commonplace among your classmates.
  • Use the readings to add a few sentences to the Wikipedia article(s). Cite those statement to the readings or other reliable sources, as you learned in the online training.
  • This is your first of two Wikipedia assignments so take it easy.
  • Make sure you are signed in when you make the edits or we will not be able to track these changes easily.
  •  The Citation Hunt tool shows unreferenced statements from articles. First, evaluate whether the statement in question is true! An uncited statement could just be lacking a reference or it could be inaccurate or misleading. Reliable sources on the subject will help you choose whether to add it or correct the statement.

  • This is your second of two Wikipedia assignments and you should be more ambitious than the first time.
  • You should be on the lookout for incomplete or inaccurate material to correct, longwinded or irrelevant material, poorly cited work, and so forth. Feel free to clean up the article a little.
  • Make sure you are signed in when you make the edits or we will not be able to track these changes easily.
