Society depends on the natural environment to meet basic survival needs of the population. Over the last century, however, people have dramatically altered their relationship with the environment, leading to the growth of environmental problems. Why and how did this happen? What are the key drivers of environmental problems today? During this course, we will use a critical and sociological perspective to explore how industrialization, neoliberalism, and globalization dramatically altered how societies use and understand the environment over time. Throughout the semester, we will interrogate and analyze the most pressing contemporary environmental concerns, from climate change to industrial pollution, in order to understand the social dimension of the creation of environmental problems and their unequal distribution across groups in society.
