Hi @L235: thanks for this. Would you mind giving me an example of how this could be problematic? I could live with a hatnote as well, but I do think it would be better for newbies if we make it even simpler. I have been editing in this area for a decade and I still can't figure out how to navigate all the byzantine ARBPIA process stuff - I am keen to make it simpler for all of us.

As an aside, I enjoyed reading your essay. This sentence really resonated: We brand ourselves as "anyone can edit", but we really mean "anyone who has general competence, enough social skills to get along with others on the internet, and skill in research and writing" can attempt to volunteer hours of their time trying to make a small difference in an often-hostile environment. I think it encapsulates our strengths and weaknesses very well. Personally I would like to see us make more of a positive of these characteristics; that contributing to Wikipedia becomes something that all such people are expected to do with their areas of specialist interest, much like we give to charity or pay our taxes.

All of the links to WP:ARBPIA at Special:WhatLinksHere/WP:ARBPIA reference the old case. We have a presumption against retargeting such redirects. Thanks @L235: I have been editing in the area for many years and I have found it impossible to remember WP:A/I/PIA. All editors just discuss ARBPIA, ARBPIA, ARBPIA, and in using that term they are not referring to the original case but to the latest status.
