Week 1: Wikipedia essentials

  • Introduction to how Wikipedia will be used in the course
  • Handout: Editing Wikipedia
Assignment (due week 2)
  • Start the online student orientation. During this training, you will create an account, make edits in a sandbox, and learn the basic rules of Wikipedia.

Week 2: Editing basics

  • Complete the online training for students.
  • Create a user page, and then click the "enroll" button at the top of this course page.
  • To practice editing and communicating on Wikipedia, introduce yourself on the user talk page of one of your classmates, who should also be enrolled in the table at the bottom of the page.
Milestone
  • All students have Wikipedia user accounts and are listed on the course page.
  • Select research topic for Wikipedia Project

Week 3: Exploring the topic area

  • Critically evaluate an existing Wikipedia article(s) related to your topic, and leave suggestions for improving it on the article’s talk page.
  • Research and list 3–5 articles on your Wikipedia user page that you will consider working on as your main project.
  • Identify the gaps in the Wikipedia articles and hence the possible areas of research for you to explore more deeply. Submit report on what gaps you intend to fill.
  • Seek help from librarians to begin building your bibliography.

Week 4: Begin Research

  • Bibliography for Wikipedia project is due. Include a reading schedule outlining which works you will read in the next four weeks.
