Some observations[edit]

Regarding the formalization of ethnicity (as a property of a person), arguments were being made both in favor of:

  1. Recording the ethnicity as per how the person identifies
(Some seemed to favor doing this in contemporary categories and terms regardless of when the person in question was/is alive.)
  2. Reflecting reputable records, e.g. in libraries and museums
(It was pointed out that these records avail themselves of the terms in use at the time.)

Regarding the didactics of Wikidata and a possible need for more specific teaching/training:

  • Abstraction and the non-lingual/formalized nature of concepts/items/properties is generally not well understood.
(reflected in widespread concern that items are missed in queries when “[the records are] not labeled with the right words”)
