I've initially created this page, and given it a "start" with my own views. These are just my own opinions. Please add suggestions on the project subpage, and we'll discuss it until a consensus emerges. Policies decided on will then migrate to the main project page. Marc Shepherd 19:52, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
Classification (categorisation) of encyclopaedia articles
[edit]May I suggest that the classification scheme which I spent some time devising might just be of some use here - at least as a basis for discussion. (Dixon, Geoffrey. The Gilbert & Sullivan Sorting System: a classification scheme for use with the materials of G.& S. studies. Ayr, Rhosearn Press - 2001). Although there may be slight differences between a scheme devised for "units of information" rather than encyclopaedia articles, the basic aims are the same, namely the identification, enumeration and effective ordering of those areas of knowledge and thought that comprise a (any) field of study. Any one particular arrangement will never of course satisfy all users all the time but it is possible to arrive at a reasonable scheme. A classification scheme intended for the arrangement of discrete physical objects requires a notation system in order to mechanise that arrangement and this serves as a useful shorthand for referring to named categories. I have classified by the scheme referred to some of the "categories" advanced in this project and, so far, have not been defeated in "placing" any of them.
This note is too long already but may I finish by listing the basic Classes of my scheme (and their first expansion) which together cover the whole field.
