Yancy Bailey Spencer III (July 2, 1950 – February 14, 2011) was a surfer from Pensacola, Escambia County, Florida, who was widely regarded as the father of Gulf Coast surfing.[1]
Family
He was son of Yancy Bailey Spencer, Jr. (North Carolina, 1929 - 2010), Private First Class (PFC) in World War II, and wife Patricia Lee Rice, daughter of John Friend Rice and wife Alice Loretta Rominger, of German descent, paternal granddaughter of Charles Edward Rice and wife Cornelia Elizabeth / J. Mitchell, and maternal granddaughter of Edward Eugene Rominger and wife Clara "Carrie" Sarah Ann Mendenhall, both of German descent.
His brother John S. Spencer, is the Pastor of a Christian Church, Calvary Chapel, Coastline, Gulf Breeze, Santa Rosa County, Florida. His other brother, J. B. Schluter Spencer, is a Gulf Breeze, Santa Rosa County, Florida, City Council Member.
Yancy Bailey Spencer, Jr. married a third time on April 9, 1988 Helen Delabar Martison (Van Lear, Kentucky, December 18, 1939).
He was paternal grandson of Yancy Bailey Spencer (1890 - ?) and wife Georgia "Georgie" C. Smith (1898 - ?), daughter of William Wyatt Smith and wife Sarah "Sallie" Julia Wade, who had three children. Great-grandson of William Robert Spencer and Martha A. Glidewell.
He married his second wife Lydia Ann Brown, daughter of Eugene Fuller "Gene" Brown II and wife Maxine Boatright, both from Missouri, paternal granddaughter of Eugene Fuller Brown (son of Silas Fuller Brown and wife Susan Frances Tower) and wife Helen Elizabeth Bahbo Dobbins (daughter of John Alexander Dobbins and wife Kate Ward Hurt) and maternal granddaughter of John Leonard Boatright (son of Peter Leonard Barem Boatright and wife Frances Lovina Midgett) and wife Lela Lou Looney (daughter of Benjamin Franklin Looney and wife Etna Dallas Eaves).
They had two children, actress Abigail Spencer and Sterling Spencer, born in 1986.
His older son, Yancy Bailey Spencer IV, born in 1974, was from his first marriage.
He had three grandchildren, Britney Noelle, Roman Allen Pruett (born on September 19, 2008), and Wyatt Yancy.
Death
Yancy died while surfing at County Line, California, on February 14, 2011. The cause of death was thought to be a major heart attack.[2]
A statue of him was erected on Pensacola Beach, Florida.[3]
