Aluf Yoav Galant (Hebrew: יואב גלנט; born November 1958) is the commander of the Israel Defense Forces Southern Command, and has been chosen (subject to the approval by the Israeli government) to succeed Gabi Ashkenazi as the next Chief of General Staff.[1]
Born in Jaffa, Israel, Galant received a B.A. in Business and Finance Management from the University of Haifa. He began his military career in 1977 as a naval commando in the unit called Flotilla 13, which he would later command[2]. In the early 1980's he worked as a lumberjack in Alaska[3]. In the late 1990s Galant moved into land forces, commanding the Jenin Brigade of the West Bank Division, the "Idan" Armored Division, and eventually attaining the rank of a major general while becoming the Military Secretary of the Prime Minister in 2002 and later commander of the Southern Command in 2005.
On August 22, 2010, Minister of Defense Ehud Barak presented the candidacy of Galant for the post of the IDF's 20th Chief of Staff to the government.[4]
