Yongphulla Airport (IATA: YON, ICAO: VQTY)[2] (also spelled Yonphula) is a small domestic airport located near Trashigang, a town in the Trashigang District in Bhutan.[3] It is currently one of only four airports in Bhutan.

Overview

Formerly an unpaved airstrip that was largely unused, it was re-constructed in order for it to become a viable domestic airport.[4] Yongphulla Airport was scheduled for completion in January 2010, but as of August 2010 work was still ongoing.[5]

While the airport was successfully finished, Drukair commercial flights to Yonphula airport are currently suspended because of regulatory requirements. The ATR 42-500 while being able to land on the 3.8 percent slope runway of Yongphulla airport, is prohibited from doing so in commercial flights as there is a limitation in the manual of 2 percent.[6] There are plans for one more domestic airport to be built at Gelephu in Sarpang District.[7]

Facilities

The airport resides at an elevation of 9,000 feet (2,700 m) above mean sea level. It has one unidirectional runway designated 12/30 with an Asphalt surface measuring 4,154 by 120 feet (1,266 m × 37 m).[4][8] Landings are possible only on RWY 12, take offs on RWY 30.[9]
