Jarkent or Zharkent (Template:Lang-kz), formerly known as Panfilov ([Панфилов] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help), until 1991) and Dzharkent ([Джаркент] Error: {{Lang-xx}}: text has italic markup (help), until 1942), is a town in Almaty Province, Kazakhstan, the administrative center of Panfilov District. It is located near the Ili river. Its approximate coordinates are 44°10′N 80°00′E / 44.167°N 80.000°E.
Population in 1998 was approximately 34,100.
The town was founded in 1882 as Dzharkent. From 1942 until 1991 it was named Panfilov after Ivan Panfilov, the Russian World War II hero who died in battle in 1941.
