Using shortened footnote templates for book references

Why use shortened footnote templates?

[edit]
  • Shortened footnotes or short citations are beneficial when individual sets of footnotes reference different pages from the same source.
  • The full citations are then placed in alphabetic or alphanumeric order, rather than in order of citation use. This facilitates locating the citation when viewing the section by itself.
  • They link short citations to full citations.
  • They are useful when cleaning up parenthetical references, which have been deprecated.
  • They can be used to rectify the confusion of using Ibid. (See ibīdem.)

The two most common shortened footnote templates

[edit]
  • {{sfn}}
    • Syntax: {{sfn | <last> | <year> | p=<page #> | loc=<location>}} or {{sfn | <last1> | <last2> | <last3> | <last4> | <year> | p=<page #> | loc=<location> }}
    • Generates opening and closing ref tags and requires a full citation template.
    • Help page at Help:Shortened footnotes (H:SFN or WP:SRF)
  • {{harvnb}} (Template:Harvard citation no brackets)
    • Syntax: <ref>{{harvnb | <last> | <year> | p=<page #> | loc= <location> }}</ref> or <ref>{{harvnb | <last1> | <last2> | <last3> | <last4> | <year> | p=<page #> | loc=<location> }}</ref>
    • This must be placed within opening and closing ref tags and requires a full citation template.
  • Last/author name(s) and date are mandatory unless the citation omits a date/year, in which case the last/author name is mandatory. The page # and location are optional and usually exclusive of each other.

Examples

[edit]

Step by step: how to do it

[edit]

Recommended: install User:Ucucha/HarvErrors.js

[edit]

This will warn you of any errors such as full citations that are not used by shortened footnotes, or sfns that do not have a full citation to which to link.

To install the script, Add: importScript('User:Ucucha/HarvErrors.js'); to Special:MyPage/common.js.

Pick an article

[edit]

State your intention on the article talk page

To obtain a full citation and a sfn via Citer

[edit]
  • Pick a citation in your target article that needs conversion
  • If you have a URL, DOI, ISBN, PMID, PMCID, or OCLC number, go to Citer at https://citer.toolforge.org/. The default choice is URL/DOI/ISBN. Other choices on the drop-down list are PMID, PMCID, and OCLC number.
  • If you only have a title for a book, a journal, or article, go search WorldCat.org to get an OCLC number or an ISBN, then go to Citer at citer.toolforge.org.
  • Citer examplesNote that some need to be manually adjusted
  • If the citation link goes to a Google books item, then follow the About this link-->Get this book in print-->Find in a library pulldown/links. This will take you to WorldCat to get an OCLC number or an ISBN, then go to Citer.
  • At Citer, pick the appropriate ID type from the drop down list at the upper left, enter the ID value (URL, DOI, ISBN, OCLC number, etc.) that you have. Submit.
  • Copy the Shortened footnote and citation to a text editor.
  • Adjust the citation as needed. For instance, if the URL or DOI is to an article, and the generated citation omits the author(s) or date(year), alter the citation and the {{sfn}} template accordingly, including any |ref= values. If the citation has one or more author last names, it will generate a ref value containing the each of the first four author names plus the year of publication.
  • Citer will typically render a single author as {{sfn |last_name |year |p=}} format whereas it will render two authors will generate a {{sfn |last1_name |last2_name |year |p=}} format. Please keep this in mind if you are manually altering the generated values.
  • Or hand craft it yourself!

Placing the citation with a sfn or harvnb

[edit]
Items to note:
  • {{sfn}} and {{sfnm}} generate their own <ref></ref> tags. {{harvnb}} does not and has to be enclosed within <ref></ref> tags.
  • {{sfn|Last_name|2020|p=25}} is equivalant to <ref>{{harvnb|Last_name|2020|p=25}}</ref>.
  • See the section on Author–date citation templates for more detail.
  • Citation templates that have the author(s) and date or year values will automatically generate the author(s)/year value for the |ref= parameter. Otherwise you will need to use {{SfnRef}} to assign a value, such as |ref={{SfnRef|Name|Year}} or |ref={{SfnRef|Name 1|Name 2|Name 3|Name 4|Year}}
  • Ensure that there are the appropriate sections. I prefer ==References== and ===Sources=== . See MOS:NOTES.
  • Either place the full citation first by editing the Sources section (easier), or by placing the full citation and sfns simultaneously by editing the full article code (harder). Always preview! If you have User:Ucucha/HarvErrors.js installed, it will warn you of any errors.
  • Remember to place the shortened footnote(s) either while or after placing the full citation.

End steps

[edit]

After you have completed the conversion, Consider adding {{done}} ( Done) and any comments to your comments on the talk page.

If references exclusively use shortened footnotes

[edit]

Add the {{Use shortened footnotes}} template using the {{Use shortened footnotes|date=December 2020}} syntax near the top of the article. Notify a template editor or an administrator to (or if you have template editor privileges) add {{Shortened footnote editnotice}} using the {{Shortened footnote editnotice|expiry=indefinite}} syntax. See an example at Template:Editnotices/Page/Kahlil Gibran.
