{{lang}}
[edit]The following table illustrates the effect of the {{lang}}
template on Chinese characters' appearance. See also Template talk:Lang.
Explanation
[edit]The template uses the span lang
tag, whose effect may be significantly constricted
- if your browser and/or stylesheet is not configured to use a font that matches the language, for example if you purposely changed your browser's and/or stylesheet's default settings.
- if no appropriate fonts are installed for one or more languages. In this case, all characters will be displayed in another font which contains the necessary characters, but which is not intended to display text in that language, because details of a glyph might look wrong.
- An example is the cyrillic letter pe, whose italic style appearance differs among languages: Serbian п, Macedonian: п; other languages: п. AFAIK, the latter should look like a latin italic n, whereas the Serbian and Macedonian pe(s) should look a bit like an n rotated by 180° and with a horizontal line above in fonts designed for these languages. You can see this pe in the Macedonian (and Serbian) language Wikipedia's logo.
- if an appropriate font is installed, but does not contain one or more character(s), either because the font contains only a basic set of the most important characters, or because the character is never needed as it does not occur in the written language the font was designed for. To give an example, a Chinese font may contain simplified characters while lacking traditional forms, or vice versa; many hanja are not contained in the major Korean fonts. Each character not contained in the font will be replaced with the same character from another font.
If characters appear too small, remember that you can increase text size if you are viewing this in a browser: Hold down the “Ctrl” button, then press “+” once or several times, then release, or select “View” → “Text Size” → “Increase” in the menu bar.
