United States gold coins (IV) – The Stella (1879–80)[edit]

Reason: High quality, high EV (complete design set). The gold Stella (a four-dollar coin), struck for only two years (1879–80), was intended to be used internationally as a trade coin. It was struck as a pattern coin, and never really intended for circulation. The Flowing Hair obverse was designed by Charles E. Barber and the Coiled Hair by George T. Morgan. While the 1879 Flowing Hair stella is more “common” (roughly 400 to 500 may have been struck), the 1880 Coiled Hair is one of eight known to exist. The third coin is a quintuple stella ($20) of which only five are known in gold. The specimen below was once in the collection of King Farouk of Egypt
