Çomar

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Çomar is a Turkish slang used to refer to stereotypical bigoted, religious, nationalistic, conservative, and uneducated Turks who strongly support Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.[1]

Background[edit]

The word was originally used to refer to large shepherd dogs in rural Anatolia which are known for their extreme loyalty to their owner,[2] although they became a political word after the Gezi Park protests.[1][3] The word is essentially a Turkish version of "redneck". The Turkish Language Association gave another meaning of the word as "an intolerant, rude, aggressive person".[4]
