The bulldog ant Myrmecia brevinoda is the largest ant in the world in terms of average worker size[1]

This is a list of ant species recorded in Australia that are found in Australia itself and the external territories that are owned by Australia. The diversity is among the largest. As of 1999, the invertebrates of Australia that were identified as ants included 1,275 described species and subspecies, 103 genera and 10 subfamilies.[2]

Subfamilies

Since 1999, the number of subfamilies has changed when previous subfamilies were synonymised under the subfamily Dorylinae.[3] Most reference works on ants proceed from the subfamilies. In Australia, 12 subfamilies are found:

Leptanilla

Leptanilla is a genus of ants in the subfamily Leptanillinae, containing 44 species. Many species of this genus are found in Africa, consisting of a few hundred workers per colony, where they will construct colonies under soil. Only a single species within this genus has been described in Australia. Workers of this species are approximately 1.3 to 1.5 millimetres (0.051 to 0.059 in) long and pale yellow in colour.

  1. ^ Introduced species to Australia that is restricted to the country's northern regions.[97]
  2. ^ Introduced species to Australia which has a global invasive distribution, originally from West Africa.[98]
  3. ^ Introduced species to Australia that is a serious threat to native invertebrate fauna.[121]
  4. ^ Introduced species to Australia that is present in the Northern Territory, although a nest was found in Perth, Western Australia.[140]
  5. ^ Introduced species to Australia, with the first detection occurring in 2001 in Brisbane, Queensland.[141] Populations of the Red imported fire ant were also recently discovered in Port Botany in Sydney.[142]
  6. ^ Introduced species to Australia. Earliest records indicate that the first occurrence of the ant was in 1858.[147]
