They have nothing to do with 8-N-1, which is the standard config for an RS-232 serial port connection (often used to connect a PC to an external modem). I removed a sentence that stated V.42 supplanted 8-N-1 (a nonsensical statement) and the following sentence that correctly stated that 8-N-1 continued to be used by external V.42 serial modems (since it was redundant without the misinformation it corrected). undo Tag: Visual edit
