The men's 100 metres at the 2000 Summer Olympics as part of the athletics program were held at the Stadium Australia from September 22 to 23.[1]
In the first round, the first three runners from each of the ten heats, together with the eight next fastest runners from all heats (11×3+8=41), automatically qualified for the second round. In the second round, these forty-one runners competed in five heats, with the first three from each heat and the single next fastest runner (5×3+1=16) qualifying for the semifinals. In the semifinals, only the first four runners from each of the two heats advanced to the final (2×4=8).
Records
Prior to the competition[update], the existing World and Olympic records were as follows.
World record | Maurice Greene (USA) | 9.79 s | Athens, Greece | 16 June 1999 |
Olympic record | Donovan Bailey (CAN) | 9.84 s | Atlanta, United States | 27 July 1996 |
No new records were set during the competition.
Qualification
The qualification period for athletics took place between 1 January 1999 to 11 September 2000. For the men's 100 metres, each National Olympic Committee was permitted to enter up to three athletes that had run the race in 10.27 seconds or faster during the qualification period. If an NOC had no athletes that qualified under that standard, one athlete that had run the race in 10.40 seconds or faster could be entered.
