Calvin Goldspink (born 24 January 1989) is a British actor and former child pop star. He first came to notice as a member of the manufactured pop group S Club Juniors (the group changed its name to S Club 8 after S Club 7 split up). He was born in Great Yarmouth to parents Stephen and Caroline Goldspink, he also has a younger brother called Jamie (James) who is two years younger. Aged six he moved with his family to Peterculter, a suburb of Aberdeen. For three years running, Goldspink won the Popjustice readers' poll award for "Most Inappropriately Fanciable Popstar". He attended Cults Academy in Aberdeen. He stated on his official website that he is approximately 5'11 in height. As of 2014 he splits his time between the UK and Los Angeles to record music and audition for acting roles.
2001–03: S Club 8
At the age of 12 Goldspink auditioned for the chance to perform onstage with S Club 7. Chosen from 12,000 hopefuls live on the BBC, the band were originally only supposed to be supporting S Club 7 on their Carnival tour. Instead "S Club Juniors" were formed and had success with their first single, "One Step Closer" reaching #2 in the UK Singles Chart.
Goldspink was part of an 8-piece pop group signed to Simon Fuller's 19 Management and Universal Records subsidy Polydor. As a member of S Club Juniors he had four top 10 singles and a platinum top 5 album Together and, in 2003, had their own "S Club United Tour" across the UK and Ireland. To top the year off, the Juniors won "best newcomer" at the Disney Channel Kids Awards.
After having been in the music industry for almost two years, and after the disbandment of S Club, S Club Juniors were renamed "S Club 8" and they followed with another hit album Sundown, which produced three further top 20 singles.
2004–05: I Dream
In 2004, the group spent three months in Barcelona, Spain, filming a children’s BBC television programme I Dream, about a group of teenagers winning a place at a secret stage school where they all played themselves and starred alongside Christopher Lloyd. Goldspink said, "It was an amazing experience to be filming a show with one of my idols; Back to the Future is one of my all time favourite movies." The show was an instant hit in the UK, and is now on screens across Europe and Australia. An album, Welcome to Avalon Heights was released to accompany the series, along with a duet from Frankie and Calvin, "Dreaming" which was to be their last single before the group disbanded in early 2005.
2007–2010: Return to music
Goldspink moved to Los Angeles in January 2007 to begin work on his album after being spotted at the Seth Riggs Singing Camp. Work on the album was postponed for a year as he booked to film a TV series in South Africa. In 2008 he returned to Los Angeles to start work on the album he has worked with various producers and has recorded numerous amounts of songs since. On 22 January 2009, Goldspink set up a music Myspace, which saw over 100,000 hits within 14 days. The songs that have been released on the internet so far are "Hollywood Birds", "Private Show", "Don't Fail Me", "Dance in the Rain", "Lonely", "Bright Lights", "Take My Hand" and "Never Not Beautiful" written by Jessica Simpson. Joe Simpson, father of Ashlee and Jessica managed Goldspink's music career during this time. Ashlee and Jessica have both endorsed Goldspink on their MySpaces. He performed his first solo gig at the "Pig N Whistle" on Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles on 14 May 2009. He also was a special guest at the OC ICON/IDOL finales in Long Beach, California on 19 September 2009, where he performed "Bright Lights", "Don't Fail Me", and "Turn Around".
Goldspink confirmed via Twitter that he will be recording in New York City for a week in August 2010 with Claude Kelly. This comes after four months recording in London working with various producers/writers. In December 2010 he put the first samples of his new music online, a track called Supa Swag and Make Ya Famous.
He has spilt his time between Los Angeles and the UK since 2007. He has also spent time recording in various cities such as Amsterdam, Los Angeles, New York and London. During this time Calvin was managed by John Black at Black Gold Management.
It is unknown when his music will be released. Calvin premiered his, "Make Ya Famous" on Kali FM radio in March 2011. In August 2011 his song 'Don't fail me' featured on the hit show 'Glee' 's promo.
2013-Present: Shows and stage name Calvin Gold
In June 2013, Goldspink began gigging in Los Angeles, California. He was briefly billed under the stage name of Calvin Gold.However, he has now returned to his old and original name Calvin Goldspink. His debut single IDGAF was released on 16 September 2013 worldwide. During this time he parted ways with his manager Joe Simpson.The song SUPERMAN was released on 31 Jan 2014. An original song FOUR LEAF CLOVER performed in the Hollywood Hills ahead of Calvin's Showcase Live appearance got published on 5 March 2014. Calvin now lives in the UK were he has started performing gigs at venues across the UK.
In January 2007, shortly before his eighteenth birthday, he moved to Los Angeles after being spotted at Seth Riggs Singing Camp in 2006. He won the role of twin "Oliver Banks", in the US pilot of the hit British series Wild at Heart renamed Life Is Wild for The CW network. He filmed the pilot for the 45 minute show on location in South Africa at the end of February 2007. He lived in South Africa between June and November 2007 to film the series. Although the show was picked up, it only lasted one season.
In February 2011 he announced via Twitter that he'd booked his first film role he will be playing James Middleton the brother of Kate Middleton in the film William and Kate About the love story between Prince William and Kate Middleton. He began filming in Los Angeles on 24 February 2011. The film premiered on 18 April 2011 in the USA on Lifetime channel.
He announced via Twitter in April 2011 he will play the role of Dan in a Marcus Warren film called 'The Pitch'. The film is in the horror/thriller genre and the plot revolves around two young business men who buy the opportunity to play on their favourite football team's pitch. However a year later it was revealed that the title of the film had changed to 'Kick' and Goldspink was no longer part of the film.
