The Chicago area has numerous limited-access freeways and tollways. Highways with one contiguous number through the area are separated into different segments and labeled—for example, the Edens Expressway is Interstate 94 through the northern portion of the area. Such use of differing terminologies can often be confusing to visitors to Chicago, but are useful for commuters in determining which routes to avoid during rush-hour commutes.
