Treaties extended by the United Kingdom to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Gilbert and Ellice Islands (1892–1976). From 1916–71, the Gilbert and Ellice Islands were part of the British Western Pacific Territories. A treaty extended to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands remains in force for the independent successor countries only if the country has declared its succession to the treaty.
