Portals[edit]

@Tahc: The Christianity portal is already related to the Catholicism portal, thus abundant. Chicbyaccident (talk) 11:40, 3 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

So the two portals each relate to the other. That is what we would expect. I don't see your point. tahc chat 17:25, 3 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

What will be the fate of "Category:Catholicism" and its numerous subcategories?[edit]

Since the term Catholicism redirects now to the Catholic Church, what will be the fate of Category:Catholicism and its numerous subcategories? That is a huge question, since it might affect many subcategories and numerous articles. We have a very good system of categories and subcategories under the Category:Catholic Church. So, what will happen now with the parallel system of categories and subcategories under the Category:Catholicism? Sorabino (talk) 17:19, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

For background, an inverted yet related discussion took place here: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2017_June_4#Category:History_of_the_Catholic_Church, but with no clear results. Chicbyaccident (talk) 14:13, 3 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Moved here for convience. Hope you don't mind. If you do, please let me know. Chicbyaccident (talk) 08:11, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal[edit]

A merge discussion to one way or the other has been initiated here: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2017 October 24. Chicbyaccident (talk) 15:58, 24 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cat main|Catholicity[edit]

I changed the scope header to

but was reverted. i don't understand why. The original one was just a re-direct to this target. Why would you want a deliberate re-direct? Laurel Lodged (talk) 11:35, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This very recent change makes Catholicism redirect to Catholic Church for reasons left unclear. Whatever Category:Catholicism is about, it is not about just the Catholic Church, so we are not going to make the main article for Category:Catholicism into Catholic Church.
I have to agree with Laurel Lodged's redirect fix. tahc chat 17:51, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, sorry, I objected. Would you mind that we discuss changes to this category a little bit before going WP:BOLD? Perhaps even wait until this duscussion finishes: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2017_October_24#Category:Catholic_denominations? As Tahc pointed out, for one thing Catholicism redirects to Catholic Church which is one thing to keep in mind. Categories should aim to reflect WP:Consensus in the article realm. Chicbyaccident (talk) 23:15, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Category names do not need to reflect consensus in the article realm. The category system has a different purpose and has different policies than those on naming articles in the main-space. There are only some cases where a change in one should be reflected in the other. tahc chat 23:54, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
They do not need to but should arguably aim to at least where the article realm indicates risk of disconsent. Is the category tree free-standing from WP:NPOV and WP:CONSENSUS in article realm talk pages? Chicbyaccident (talk) 00:15, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Place Clichy insisted that "this is obvious enough. Look in any common dictionary". I beg pardon about that assertion. If that is so obvious, why can't this be traced back to the article realm? Until, I tried to update the header in a more WP:NPOV fashion. (For the record, I changed my username from the one immediately here above). PPEMES (talk) 19:26, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We have had some discussion before about Category:Catholicism versus Category:Catholic Church, most particularly here. Based on those earlier discussions I believe there is consensus that Category:Catholic Church is for the Catholic Church as an organisation only. Everything that goes beyond the actual organisation should be in Category:Catholicism. The following reverts [1] [2] [3] are, in my honest opinion, not in line with the previous discussion.
@PPEMES, Fayenatic london, Oculi, Place Clichy, Mr. Guye, Carlossuarez46, and Laurel Lodged: pinging contributors to the beforementioned discussion: could you also provide your thoughts on these reverts. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:48, 23 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Since I made these three reverts, my interpretation was that longstanding previous consensus required such eventual edits to be discussed first. So I would welcome your arguments here, but am hesitant to the above provided so far. For starters, this Category:Catholicism says "The faith and practices of Catholic people". As you can see, I put an "according to whom" to that statement (while implicitely also wondering about the definitions applied). I think some sort of reference to sourced and assessed article realm content would be at hand. PPEMES (talk) 15:13, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Re the first revert, since it was not related exclusively to the CC but other faiths, then Catholicism is the correct category. The second revert is probably exclusively Roman Catholic and so should be in Catholic category. The third one definitely includes Eastern Catholics so the Catholicism cat should be used.
