City University of Hong Kong (Abbreviation: CityU/城大) is a comprehensive research university in Hong Kong. It was founded in 1984 as City Polytechnic of Hong Kong and became a fully accredited university in 1994. It has achieved fast growth in recent years and received international recognition for its academic achievements.[2] It was ranked 110th among the world's top universities, according to the QS World University Rankings 2011,[3] with subjects such as Linguistics and Statistics ranked top 50 worldwide. The 2012 QS Asian University Rankings[4]rated CityU as 12th among the top Asian universities and the 4th in Hong Kong. Besides, QS also ranked CityU 9th among the world’s top 50 young universities less than 50 years old according to its position in the 2011 QS World University Rankings.[5] As of 2011, student enrollment stood at about 18,000, with more than 3,000 staff members employed. More than 130 academic programmes are offered within the following schools and colleges: Business, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, Creative Media, Energy and Environment, and Law. Post-graduate studies are offered through the Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies. The School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE), an extension of CityU, provides quality continuing education for professional practice.

Campus

City University of Hong Kong is located in Tat Chee Avenue, Kowloon Tong, near the MTR Kowloon Tong Station (East Rail Line / Kwun Tong Line) and Festival Walk. The main campus area is around ​​15.6 hectares, including Academic 1 and Academic 2, Amenities Building, Mong Man-wai Building, Fong Yun-wah Building, Cheng Yick-chi Building, and Academic Exchange Building, To Yuen Building, Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre, two senior staff quarters (Nam Shan Yuen, Tak Chee Yuen), Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre and the Student Residential Halls.

Academic 1

The initial buildings for CityU including Academic 1 were designed by Percy Thomas Partnership with Fitch and Chung, after winning an international design competition. The first phase of construction was completed in 1990 and the second phase (increasing capacity to 20,000 students) in 1993. The buildings had to be low-rise because of airport height restrictions.[6]

Academic 2

Academic 2 is a combined academic, administrative and amenities building for programmes of 20,900 sq.m. in net operational area, located near the Amenities Building and Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre. It is a new 9-storey building with 12 lecture theatres, 45 classrooms, 11 computer rooms, a canteen with a capacity of 800 diners, staff offices, a number of multi-function rooms, and plenty of learning resources and common areas.

Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre

In November 2010 a new Creative Media Centre was completed. This was created by Studio Daniel Libeskind with Leigh & Orange Limited. The distinctive design includes a range of spaces, lighting and materials to inspire the students. The building was designed to house the School of Creative Media, the Centre for Media Technology and the Department of Computer Engineering and Information Technology.[7]

Academic 3 (construction in progress)

Academic 3 is a combined academic, amenities, and administrative building of 20,500 sq.m. in net operational area which includes facilities such as classrooms, lecture theatres with one holding up to 600 people, teaching and research laboratories, multi-function rooms, a canteen, common areas, administrative offices and a roof garden.

Academic Organizations

Colleges and Schools

The three Colleges: Business, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, and the School of Creative Media and School of Law offer bachelor’s degree, UGC-funded associate degree and postgraduate programmes. The newly established School of Energy and Environment currently offers postgraduate degree programmes.

The Chow Yei Ching School of Graduate Studies strengthens the operation and development of all postgraduate programmes and fosters an ambiance for graduate studies.

The School of Creative Media, the Division of Building Science and Technology and the Community College of City University (CCCU) run associate degree programmes. The School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE) helps fulfil the University’s role as a centre for life-long education by providing continuing educational opportunities for the community through selffinancing degree, certificate and short programmes.

Library

The Run Run Shaw Library was established in 1984. In 1989, the Library moved to its current location in the Academic 1 of the University campus in Kowloon Tong and the following year it was named Run Run Shaw Library in recognition of a generous donation by Sir Run Run Shaw.

Located on Level 3 of Academic 1, the Library occupies a central location which is easily accessible to users. It has a total area of 11,550 square metres. The total number of seats available is around 2,200 during term time and 2,700 during the Revision and Examination Periods.

The Library's collection includes more than 955,500 volumes of print books and over 2 million volumes of electronic books. The collection also comprises around 202,900 volumes of bound periodicals and around 2,690 print serials titles. The Library maintains an expanding number of electronic resources including 365 electronic databases, around 69,500 e-journals, and around 54,400 media resources.

Computer Services Centre

Sports

Hu Fa Kuang Sports Centre is a five-storey sports center which houses a multi-purpose hall and four practice gymnasiums for badminton, basketball, volleyball, martial arts and dance, etc. There is a table-tennis room, six squash courts, an indoor sport-climbing wall, two physical fitness rooms and two golf driving rooms plus a golf simulation room. Besides, CityU has a 50-metre, Olympic-size swimming pool and a full-size outdoor basketball court. The off-campus Joint Sports Centre provides a variety of outdoor sports facilities, including an international standard 8-lane all-weather running track and field facilities, an 11-a-side natural grass football pitch, four tennis courts with a 200-seat spectator stand, a multi-purpose court and two-bay golf practice area.It is jointly owned by CityU, HKBU and PolyU.

Student Life

Students' Union

The CityU Students’ Union, established in 1986, aims to foster a spirit of unity, independence and democracy among students as well as promote and safeguard the rights and welfare of its members. It has a high degree of autonomy in running its own affairs. Its 19 societies, approximately 40 affiliated clubs and seven residents’ associations organise regular functions throughout the year.

Sport Teams

CityU is “One of the Best Universities in Sports” among 11 member tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. It is the only University that has captured Double Champions for 6 times in both Men’s and Women’s Overall Championship in the USFHK Sports Competition in the year 1996-97, 2000-01, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11. CityU now has over 400 athletes in 16 sports events.

Student Residential Halls

Student Residence at Cornwall Street comprises 9 residential halls, 8 for undergraduate and 1 for postgraduate students, namely Jockey Club Humanity Hall, HSBC Prosperity Hall, Alumni Civility Hall, Jockey Club Academy Hall, Chan Sui Kau Hall, Lee Shau Kee Hall, Jockey Club Harmony Hall, Hall 9 and Hall 8 (Postgraduate Hall).

Alumnus

  • Bona Mugabe - Mugabe enrolled in autumn 2008 and the University was criticised for allowing the daughter of a dictator, Robert Mugabe, to study in Hong Kong. Sanctions had been imposed against Zimbabwe by the European Union, USA and Australia. The university's response was to say "education, frankly, is above politics".[8]
