The Happy Death Day film series consists of slasher-horror black comedies, developed and produced by Blumhouse Productions. Created by Christopher Landon and Scott Lobdell, the series centers around a Theresa "Tree" Gelbman who upon being murdered in her dormroom by an invader becomes caught in a time loop, forced to relive the day she is killed endlessly. Through the eternity of events, Tree seeks to prevent her death and solve the mystery of the identity of her murderer.

In February 2019, Landon announced plans to complete a trilogy reporting that he has ideas for the final film. That same month, Blum confirmed discussions within the studio stating, "we're gonna make a third movie, we want to make a third movie."[1][2] Following the less-than-expected box office performance of Happy Death Day 2U, development on the third film was shelved, though Landon stated that he planned to release the story he had written in some format at some point.[3][4][5] In February 2020, Blum announced that the third Happy Death Day film is still in development and stated that he is working on securing a deal with studio's involved, calling the project a personal priority.[6][7]
In September of the same year, Landon confirmed a third film is in active development, with Happy Death Day to Us as its title. Rothe is slated to reprise her role.[8] By November, he stated that the film is ready and waiting for approval from Universal Pictures.[9] In February 2021 following the release of Freaky, the filmmaker stated that the next project he plans on completing is the third Happy Death Day film.[10] In June 2021, Landon confirmed that development on the film is ongoing and stated that some news regarding its status will be released in the not-too-distant future.[11] By October of the same year, Blum confirmed that developments for the next film are ongoing.[12] In January 2022, Blum stated that the project is still in development.[13][14] By June 2022, Landon and Blum had a meeting where they discussed and planned the future of the franchise.[15]
In November 2022, Jason Blum and James Wan announced that they would be merging their respective studios, Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster Productions, with the merged studio intended to expand the established franchises that each company has created.[16] By January of 2023 however, Landon stated that as time goes by he feels less optimistic about the project becoming a reality. The filmmaker stated that discussions had been underway for the movie to be a Peacock exclusive, though the studio doesn't view the film as a priority. He expressed hope that one day it will be made, as well as relief that the story he has written isn't time-sensitive and that the sequel could be made at any point that the studio approves doing so.[17] In February of the same year, the Landon stated that he has stories for the third film and the Freaky cross-over written in his mind; and though he'd like to develop both projects, he hopes Happy Death Day to Us is produced first.[18] By April 2024, actress Jessica Rothe confirmed that the project was still in development; stating that Landon has the script completed, and that all creatives involved were waiting for Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions to greenlight the production.[19]
Freaky Death Day (TBA)[edit]
In November 2020, Christopher Landon stated that Freaky and Happy Death Day were set in the same world, stating "They def[initely] share the same DNA" stating that Mille Kessler and Tree Gelbman "will bump into each other someday."[20] Though producer Jason Blum expressed interest in a sequel to Freaky,[21] by February 2021 Landon stated that while there may not be a sequel, there are ongoing developments for a crossover film.[22] By December 2022, Blum further announced the movie would be titled Freaky Death Day, while he stated that he did not know if nor when it would be realized.[23]
In November 2023, co-writer Michael Kennedy stated that the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic had on the filmmaking business through box office returns, is what has caused delays with a third Happy Death Day movie and has delayed the crossover. The filmmaker additionally stated that without the pandemic's influence, there would be a shared universe between the two movies. Despite this, he stated that he has optimism for the realization of the script and that he, Landon, Rothe, and Newton are all interested in the project.[24]

In January 2019, Jessica Rothe featured in the music video for Whitney Avalon's "This Song is Killer (ft. Jessica Rothe)", reprising her role as Tree. The video was released in promotion of the then-upcoming Happy Death Day 2U.[29]
- Novelization
In February 2019, Blumhouse Books released a novelization written by Aaron Hartzler. Released with the title of Happy Death Day & Happy Death Day 2U, the book debuted as marketing to coincide with the second film's release and was described as a "double feature" adaptation of the first two films in the series.[30]
