Pakhawaj Maestro Pandit Dalchand Sharma

Pandit Dalchand Sharma is an eminent Pakhawaj virtuoso of ‘Nathdwara Gharana’. He hails from Bharatpur district, Rajasthan. Pandit Ji has learnt the intricate art of Pakhawaj playing from the Pakhawaj exponent Acharya Pandit Totaram Sharma in the true tradition of Guru-Shishya Parampara. He also had the opportunity of learning Pakhawaj from his Dada Guru - Late Pandit Murlidhar Sharma and Padmashri late Pandit Purushottam Das.

Dalchand Ji, with his rigorous riyaz and dedication, has developed extraordinary fitness, delicacy and expressiveness in executing the most and intricate and the toughest of rhythmic patterns on Pakhawaj. With his musical aesthetic sense, he has developed a sense of brilliant tone & bole clarity, layakari and balancing of padhant and bajant (performing both verbally and on instrument).

Dalchand Ji is a Top Grade Artist of The All India Radio and Doordarshan and has performed extensively both on the radio and television, as a soloist and as an accompanying artist. He has participated in almost all the prestigious music festivals in India (Including Playing in front of President of India in Rashtrapati Bhawan) and Abroad.

He has also participated in a TV-documentary “The Great Maestros of India”. This apart, a documentary has been filmed exclusively on Pandit Ji in a TV-series “The Pride of India”. He has played in the World Heritage documentary on Veena for UNESCO. Pandit Dalchand Sharma has provided the Pakhawaj accompaniment to almost all of the leading classical musicians (vocal & instrumental) in India. As a soloist, Pandit Ji has participated in many refresher courses and workshops organised by various universities for benefit of teachers and students. He has done extensive recordings in solo playing of Pakhawaj for the archives of the Sangeet Natak Academy.[1], Delhi and IGNCA[2]

Pandit Ji, through his performances and guidance to many students, has dedicated his life in popularising the Pakhawaj amongst the youth and reviving the fading glory oref this ancient percussion instrument. He also has many students from outside India and all of them are performing on various platforms in India and abroad.

Apart from pakhawaj, Pandit Dalchand Sharma has also received the basic training in Dhrupad and Khayal singing, he sings Haveli Sangeet and also plays tabla, which he has learnt from Late Baba Jeevan Das ji of Vrindavan. He is frequently chosen to be part of jury in the panel of many reputed organisations working in the field of music. At present he is associated with Faculty of Music & Fine Arts, University of Delhi[3]
