Harcharan Bains is an eminent freelance journalist, political ideologue, literary writer and former TV sports commentator. Bains is politically aligned with India's oldest regional party Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and is its General Secretary. Bains is currently Advisor to Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal on National Affairs and Media. Bains is widely acclaimed as the invisible force behind Badal's long and successful career as politician.[1]

Apart from being a long-time Badal loyalist, Bains is known for his literary erudition and perceptive writings on Punjab and Sikh politics, and has the rare honour of serving as adviser to two chief ministers-Surjit Singh Barnala ( 1985-1987) and Badal (since 1997). He was an assistant professor of English literature at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, when Barnala handpicked him for the coveted job. He remained in the forefront of efforts to find peace in Punjab In the 80s and mid-90s. Bains has for long been Badal's all-season media-cum-political strategist.[2][3]
