Is it really needed?[edit]

Is this page really needed? Esperanto has perfectly phonetic spelling. --Mahmudmasri (talk) 01:38, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

People unfamiliar with Esperanto may not know what the letters represent or may be unfamiliar with the IPA used for Esperanto and don't want to sift through all the characters at IPA to learn just the handful they would need to understand these transcriptions. This talk page is also a good place for centralized discussions about general issues of Esperanto transcription.
The real issue that would make us question having this guide is that no articles link to it. — Ƶ§œš¹ [ãːɱ ˈfɹ̠ˤʷɪ̃ə̃nlɪ] 02:07, 15 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
@Aeusoes1: The link you used resolves to the nonexistent Wikipedia:IPA+for+Esperanto, which is why nothing links there. Wikipedia:IPA for Esperanto (with spaces instead of plus signs) redirects to this Help article, which currently has links from 225 pages: 5 articles in the main namespace, 1 MOS page, 129 templates (all the IPA-___ templates?), and more. So it's a non-issue. --Thnidu (talk) 23:05, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

diphthongs[edit]

Many of the diphthongs lacked stressed examples, and some had several functionally equivalent examples of inflectional uses. I

  • provided stressed examples for all the diphthongs
  • rearranged each diphthong's examples in the order
    1. stressed non-prevocalic, either preconsonantal or monosyllable
    2. stressed prevocalic if available
    3. unstressed if available
(I briefly thought about putting these in separate subcolumns, but decided it would be of little use and would confuse some readers.)
  • and removed some redundant examples in the consonant column to reduce crowding.

--Thnidu (talk) 22:46, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

consonants, vowels[edit]

  • Made most consonant examples word-initial
  • made most examples similar in eng and eo (similar phonemic context)
  • made all vowel examples CVCV, providing stressed and unstressed example in the same word
  • got rid of examples containing similar and potentially confusing phonemes, e.g.,
    • socio → sekvi
    • manĝaĵo → heredaĵo

initial consonants[edit]

Added word-initial examples for those consonants that didn't have them. --Thnidu (talk) 06:27, 31 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I have added the diftong , which is extremely rare (all words I can think of are poŭpo and toŭfuo), yet it is a legitimate Esperanto diphtong. Marteno --217.155.37.242 (talk) 15:51, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Help talk:IPA which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 16:16, 15 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

inconsistency[edit]

Other Wikipedia pages about Esperanto refer to <ŭ> representing /w/, but here it is instead transcribed as non-syllabic /u/. This should probably be changed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.46.14.50 (talk) 15:33, 10 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

e[edit]

Shouldn't the 'e' in "bell" be transcribed as "ɛ" not "e"? Vilhelmo De Okcidento (talk) 20:11, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
