Izet Hajrović (born 4 August 1991) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a winger for Bundesliga club Werder Bremen and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Club career

Grasshopper

Hajrović spent nine years in Grasshopper's academy, and finally broke into first team in 2009,[2][3] when he debuted against Luzern on 3 October.[4] His brother, Sead, also played with him in the academy before moving on to Arsenal.[5] Hajrović scored his first goals, a brace, in a Swiss Cup game on 19 September 2010.[6]

Galatasaray

On 7 January 2014, Hajrović joined Turkish club Galatasaray on a four-and-a-half year deal for a transfer fee of €3.5 million.[7][8] He cited his Bosniak roots and Islam as some of the reasons he agreed to join Galatasaray.[8] He made his season debut against Bursaspor, coming in as a second-half substitute.[9] He scored his first goal against Tokatspor on 5 February, in a 3–0 Turkish Cup win.[10]

Werder Bremen

After filing a complaint to FIFA that he received no payments from Galatasaray, Hajrović was given the right to move on a free transfer elsewhere.[11] On 10 July 2014, he signed a four-year contract for Bundesliga club Werder Bremen,[12] and debuted a month later against Hertha BSC.[13] Hajrović scored his first goal on 26 April 2015 against Paderborn 07.[14]

On 3 December 2016, he suffered a severe knee injury which was reported as a anterior cruciate ligament tear and ruled him out for the rest of the season.[15][16]

Hajrović returned to the pitch on 16 September 2017, over six months after the injury.[17]

Eibar

On 31 August 2015, Hajrović was loaned to La Liga side Eibar on a season-long deal.[18] After a disappointing season, Eibar decided not to exercise their buy option, therefore letting Hajrović go back to Bremen.[19]

International career

After playing for Switzerland at youth levels, Hajrović made his senior international debut on 14 November 2012, coming on as an 83rd-minute substitute in a friendly match against Tunisia.[20] However, in June 2013, he confirmed that he would opt to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina in the future as Ottmar Hitzfeld did not give him the desired playing time.[21]

On 13 August 2013, Hajrović became eligible to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina, due to approval of the application for changing his sport citizenship from Swiss to Bosnian.[22][23] On 26 August, Bosnian national team manager Safet Sušić included Hajrović in his squad for two September 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification games against Slovakia, home and away.[24] He debuted in the home game, and on 10 September 2013, in the away game, Hajrović scored his first goal for Bosnia and Herzegovina, coming on from the bench in the 77th minute of the game. His very first contact with the ball after just a few seconds on the pitch resulted in a goal from long range.[25][26]

Hajrović was named in Bosnia and Herzegovina's squad for 2014 FIFA World Cup, their first ever major tournament.[27] He made his debut as a starter in the opening group match, a 1–2 loss to Argentina.[28]

Personal life

Izet's parents are Bosniaks from Bijelo Polje, Montenegro, but they relocated to Sarajevo in 1980. They moved to Switzerland in 1987.[29] He has a younger brother, Sead, who is also a footballer.[30] His agent is Zoran Samardžija.[31]

Hajrović is fluent in German, English and Bosnian.
