[edit] Personal life
On The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra, War Machine discussed how, as a thirteen year old boy, he unsuccessfully performed CPR on his father, only to witness him die during the process.[3]
In August 2000, Koppenhaver briefly attended The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, before being expelled. War Machine has also had several scrapes with legal authorities. On September 2, 2007, he was found guilty of striking a Las Vegas man in the face and choking him unconscious during a parking lot scuffle.[4] In February 2008, he was sentenced to three years of probation and 30 days of community service, avoiding the possible felony charge and accompanying prison time.[4]
In February 2009, War Machine began work as a topless VIP lounge bottle server at the alternative nightclub, Krave, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Koppenhaver legally changed his name to "War Machine." [5]
On July 16, 2010, Koppenhaver was sentenced to one year in jail for a felony assault conviction stemming from a fight at a Point Loma bar earlier in the year, as well as an additional fight at a Pacific Beach bar.[6] Koppenhaver was recently released after serving his one year sentence in San Diego's George Bailey Detention Facility in administrative segregation.[7][8][9]
Feb 1st 2012, it was announced via war Machine's twitter that he will be serving another year's of jail time due to preceding events. [10]
[edit] Mixed martial arts
[edit] The Ultimate Fighter
War Machine was a fighter on The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs. Team Serra, fighting on Team Serra. War Machine was not part of the original sixteen fighters initially picked for the show[11] Instead, he was brought in as a replacement when Roman Mitichyan broke his elbow during evaluations and was sent home.[12] War Machine was eliminated in the first round of the show by Tommy Speer. At one point War Machine had Speer's back and tried to sink in a rear naked choke, but with the massive amount of blood dripping, he could not tighten the hold enough to make Speer tap, and Speer went on to win the decision. The choke was controversial because it appeared that Speer had tapped, although the referee did not stop the fight.
[edit] Ultimate Fighting Championship
In War Machine's official UFC debut, he defeated Jared Rollins in The Ultimate Fighter: Team Hughes vs Team Serra Finale via KO at 2:01 of the third round. War Machine and Rollins both received 25k due to winning fight of the night honors. His last UFC fight was at UFC 84 against Yoshiyuki Yoshida which he lost via submission in the first round.[13]
He was released from the UFC after comments made about the death of Evan Tanner and for rejecting a fight offered by UFC matchmaker Joe Silva. War Machine posted on his Myspace that he believed that Tanner had gone to the desert to kill himself after he realized his career might have been over and had basically made no money during it. Medical examiners proved that Tanner's death was not a suicide but War Machine stood by his statements[14]
[edit] Bellator Fighting Championships
War Machine was signed and then released by Bellator Fighting Championships. His MySpace blog cited disparaging comments about Barack Obama -- including his "hopes someone smokes that [expletive] ( Barack Obama) and every president to come" -- as the cause for his non-participation in their upcoming tournament.[15][16]
[edit] Independent Promotions
Phil Baroni was set to fight undefeated fighter Guillaume de Lorenzi in the main event, held by XMMA on February 27, 2009. However, Baroni was forced to withdraw from the bout when he was signed by Strikeforce. War Machine was asked to step in and fight Lorenzi, War Machine took the fight on short notice and won via submission in the first round.
War Machine fought Tim Woods (4–1) on April 25, 2009 at UWC 6: Capital Punishment in Fairfax, Virginia. War Machine won the fight by submission (rear naked choke) at 4:16 of Round 2. He then defeated Erik Montano at a Total Combat event in Mexico City, War Machine again won the fight with a rear naked choke submission.
On June 20, 2009 War Machine was set to fight Roger Bowling.[17] However Roger broke his hand a couple weeks before the event and was not cleared to fight. The two agreed to fight later in the year. They were then set to fight at XFC 9 in Tampa, Florida on September 5, where it was to be the main event and would broadcast live over HDNet.com.[18] Bowling again was injured and pulled from the fight. War Machine stated he will not try and fight Bowling again and will move on in his career and verbally attacked Bowling's manager.
On September 5, 2009 War Machine stepped into the cage and faced off against Mikey Gomez. The ref stopped the fight, giving a somewhat controversial win to War Machine by TKO (punches), at 13 seconds in the third round.[19] War Machine was scheduled to fight October 3, 2009 against Jacob McClintock, but canceled the fight so he could fight on October 8, 2009 against David Mitchell.
On April 17, 2010 War Machine was set to face Tex Johnson in the main event of Wild Bill's Fight Night.[20] However, on April 16 it had been reported on TMZ.com that WM left a comment on his Twitter saying he would not be turning up to the event for the fight.[21]
On May 15, 2010 War Machine then faced Zach Light at BAMMA 3 in Birmingham, England and defeated him in the first round via submission (rear naked choke).
On July 9, 2010 War Machine Filled in as a late replacement to fight John Alessio with 5 days notice at Tachi Palace Fights 5: Stars and Strikes in Lemoore, California. War Machine lost in the third round via technical submission (rear naked choke) after refusing to tap and falling unconscious to the submission.
On November 26, 2011 War Machine fought Roger Huerta at UWF 1: Huerta vs. War Machine In Pharr, Texas. War Machine defeated Huerta by TKO in round 3 after injuring Huerta's ribs.
[edit] Return to Bellator
On December 7, 2011 it was announced that War Machine was re-signed to an exclusive deal with Bellator Fighting Championships and would be competing in their Season 6 Welterweight Tournament.[22] War Machine was expected to fight Karl Amoussou in the opening round of the the welterweight tournament at Bellator 63. However, War Machine was sentenced to a year in prison for the prior assault in Las Vegas, Nevada from December 2009 and was forced out of the bout and the tournament.[23]
[edit] Pornographic film career and legal troubles
On February 22, 2008, Koppenhaver's San Diego defense attorney arranged a lenient fine and probationary sentence for a prior assault which could have ended his fighting career, if charged as a felony.[24]
On 31 October 2009, Koppenhaver announced that he would pursue a career in pornographic films along with fighting mixed martial arts. War Machine, on the internet stated the following:
"So I said fuck it! I signed with LA Direct Models this week and today I did my first porn scene! (laugh out loud) I shot for Digital Playground with their girl Riley Steele, was fucking awesome! I was nervous as shit but I came through. I'm still gonna fight, just gonna do this too because fighting isn't quite enough money and you all know I ain't trying to work! In life I have come to learn that all I enjoy is eating, sleeping, fighting and fucking! Fuck it! I'm living the dream, getting PAID to fight and fuck! What more could I ask for?"[25]
On 28 November, War Machine was reported to what witnesses have said, "gone crazy" at porn actress Brooke Haven's birthday party. He attacked several people and ran off before the police came. Here is what he said about the situation on his Twitter.
"Fuck...last night was NOT good...lil' misunderstanding and then WM was back in effect and the bodies hit the floor. I'm fucked...Pretty sure my porn days are over. Prolly be going to jail too...when they find me...haha!"[26]
On December 1, Las Vegas Police Department issued a warrant out for his arrest.[27]
On February 28, 2010, Koppenhaver was arrested in Point Loma in San Diego, California after pushing a bar owner and destroying several glasses in the bar.[28] Witnesses said that Koppenhaver became agitated after a bartender asked for a second form of identification when Koppenhaver handed her his driver's license which used the name "War Machine" (since he had legally changed his name). Koppenhaver then became “irritated” and made a swiping motion with his hand over the bar, knocking over and shattering several bottles and glasses. The bartender said the glass hit various parts of her body, which caused some injuries. Before leaving the bar, Koppenhaver allegedly shoved another woman who was later identified as the bar's owner.
On March 31, 2010, he was again arrested in San Diego, California under suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after a confrontation at a Pacific Beach bar.[29]
The incident allegedly occurred when Koppenhaver was involved in an altercation with several individuals at the Pacific Beach bar and the bar's bouncer attempted to separate them.[30] The bouncer testified in court that Koppenhaver then punched him in the face, giving him a split lip and several loose teeth. A bar security camera captured footage of Koppenhaver then proceeding outside the bar to fight the individuals before being coaxed by his friends to stop. Koppehaver then was seen breaking free and going back on the attack against the individuals. The bouncer at the bar testified that his conduct was "beyond aggressive ... crazy almost."[30]
It was reported that officers had to place a bag over his head to keep him from spitting at them. Koppenhaver responded by way of his Twitter account saying: "Why the spit bag? Fuck if I know!?? I never spit! lol...they just put it on to be dicks and/or disguise who I was...??
[edit] Jail Sentence
On July 16th, 2010, Koppenhaver was sentenced to one year in the county jail for a felony assault conviction stemming from an fight at a Point Loma bar earlier in the year, as well as an additional fight at a Pacific Beach bar.[6] He was imprisoned in the San Diego's George Bailey Detention Facility, and served time in administrative segregation.[7]
Since going to jail, Koppenhaver has maintained his Twitter account as well as a blog documenting his time in jail. In this blog, he has stated that he believes "The oppression of MEN is worse than oppression of Jews in Nazi germany, worse than the slavery of Blacks in early America... I'm not exaggerating either."[31] Koppenhaver has also described how he was sent into administrative segregation due to jail policy violations but decided to voluntarily remain there until the end of his sentence.[32]
Koppenhaver was released from county jail on July 15, 2011.[9]
Feb 1st 2012, it was announced via Koppenhaver's twitter that he will be serving another year's of jail time due to preceding events. [33]
