Letham Pit closed as a result of the 1926 General strike. The pumps were turned off, allowing the pit to flood. The Spoil from the pit; known locally as "Garibaldi Bing", was used in the construction of the M9 Motorway. The pit closure was verified by my Father in Law, Born in Letham in 1902, who worked as an electrician at the pit head until the strike. |date=November 2006}}
